For those that wonder how NSW is collected here's how I do it. A 1500 gph pump connected to the car battery. Pump the water into barrels through a filter sock then take it home.

The tide was right this evening and I had to collect before the storm hit or I would have to wait a few days for the water to clear up due to run-off etc. Right after I got home the sky fell. Awesome light show before the storm hit.

Snapped these with my droid phone, no flash so they're a little shadowy.

That's it in a nutshell, while I was there I took some senic stuff, including a visitor

I trade the pump for a pair of waiters, and walk out to waist deep with a pair of buckets.

Do the waiters bring you wine and cheese while you fill your buckets?

Yeah, I would agree it might be better to get out a bit to get your water.... But if it works, it works!

This should give you an idea of where it is. On an incoming tide this water is pretty pristine. Red Arrow is our collection point

This is a closer view of the area.

How long can the water be kept until used?

Without circulation or aeration, a few days max. If you keep it aerated and circulated you can keep it for a while. Some people put in a dark closet for about 3 weeks so that everything dies and sinks, and then they decant the water off the top, leaving the bottom couple of inches, but for me that kind of negates the benefits of getting actual ocean water, which is full of all sorts of great things for your fish and corals.
