Hey all
I'm really bummed out now because I just got done posting about how I put sand back into my sandless tank so I could acclimate my jawfish and now I find him dying with the back end all white and beat up. Prior to getting him I had no sand but put a sizable amount in a controlled area and it did wonders the jawfish found a hole used every dead snail shell I gave him and ate pretty well when I fed him. Last night I found him buried deep under a rock and I only saw him Because I could look up under the tank where there wasn't any sand and was worried he got stuck but he wiggled free but didn't eat. I'm stumped. Everything was going perfect my friend seems to think it could have been the juvenile mystery wrasse or bi color blenny but I never saw them even take an interest. The only other fish is a sailfin tang and he was a little punkish but never attacked him. anyone have any ideas? I was feeding him a couple times a day while I was on vacation but just went back to work yesterday when this happened so I'm at once a day now.

one note: I noticed this morning that my temperature in the tank dropped 7 or 8 degrees down to almost 70 71 in the tank this morning from 79 I dont know why other than I moved the heater from the top of the tank down to the sump a few days ago. could this shock have been enough to do something? everything else in the tank including sps coral all seem okay

I doubt it was any of your fish if anything did anything to him it would've been the mystery wrasse but even then I doubt it. Perhaps he was stressed out due to the no sand bed they do require a deep sandbed... As far as the not eating could be because he is stressed or the rock could've collapsed so he was injured from that. I assume that since you saw him by looking where the sand was not I would guess that your rocks are sitting on the sand instead of underneath. I would go with rockfall. Sorry to hear it. BSJ have like the best personality.

the rocks are centered in the middle of the tank like an island and the sand was added later so I would think they are stable but I can look under from the sump area and see upwards. I thought he was okay like that because I made the bottom area with tunnels to move around in and had seen him come out from different areas

Well there's hope if nothing else. This guy got his whole tail eaten off by something (I'm guessing a pistol shrimp) and didn't come out of his hole for a week. You could see bone where all the flesh was eaten away from his tail. He never grew his tail back, but did well anyways. He was extremely pale and I thought he was a goner. I would check your ammonia just in case though.

Good luck!

Mine looks like prickles, but otherwise, he's doing fine. Still eating like a pig and still digging. I think they get this way from scraping themselves against LR, substrate, shells, etc.

Just keep an eye on him to make sure the areas don't get infected.
