Bought this frag for $10 as a chalice...not sure if that is accurate or not, but either way, didn't think the skeleton would be that thick...I have had it for about 2 weeks and there is already growth that you can see on the edges...but my question is do you think that is actually the chalice skeleton, or just what it was mounted to on the parent colony? I really didn't think it would be so thick, and am considering cutting the bottom thinner before permanently mounting it...

HELP!!

It looks more like some faviid to me, perhaps a favites. Still, not bad for ten bucks- it has some good colors and great potential. Start feeding it with some PE mysis or other good option and it will probably take off. I have never seen a chalice with a corallite structure like that..

My lfs has the exact same coral. I do also believe it is a type of favia ^ and not a chalice. That is the right skeleton size for that coral.

looks more like a mycedium, but still nice. Good pick up at great price!

Yup, looks like a mycedium. My bet is that the coral was growing over a skeleton from something else.

FYI mycedium are usually considered chalices.

I just want to know for growth esthetic purposes, should I thin out that base and then mount it?

i think you should leave it like that. the frag will continue to growth and will cover the base.
