Is there any harm in using the plastic from a plain water bottle cut up and placed in the rear chambers of a tank? I am fashioning some really cheap DIY mod and using the head of a water bottle but wasn't sure if there would be some harmful chemicals or things that would be leaked out of the plastic over time.

I've actually been reading lately about plastic water bottles possibly leaking some sort of chemical into the water. This was solely from a human consumption standpoint. But if we're starting to worry about their safeness for humans, then I would wonder about putting it in my tank. I might try and get creative and use something else if possible.

Throw that bottle to the bottom of the ocean, it's gonna be there in 100 years. It is perfectly safe for your tank.
