Hey fella's and ladies..

I was just wondering if you could offer me your OPINION on how many tangs i could keep contently in my 125g reef tank. Im not talking about any large growing tangs that get up to around 2' like the Vlamingii Tang, but lets just say your average (yellow, blue, powder brown..etc) captive raised tang that will probably only reach max around 6-9".

I LOVE TANGS! lol and although i do plan on adding smaller fish like anthias, clowns, chromis etc etc.. i would like the majority of visual beauty to be about tangs.

Here is my my current fish stock followed by my "Wish list" (i dont intend to add all my wish list but im keping my eyes out for these in specific.

CURRENT STOCK (length are without tails):
1 Hippo blue tang 4"
1 yellow tang 2"
1 sailfin tang 5"
1 stripped damsel 1.5"
2 foxface 4"
2 "nemo" clowns :wildone:
assorted snails, shrimp etc etc..

WISH LIST: (please remember im not adding all these just keeping my eye out for them)

Lieutenant Tang
Blond Naso Tang (yes i know this is a larger tang)
White Cheek tang
Brown powder tang
Pacific blue tang
Achilles tang (in my dreams) :p
Yellow eye kole tang
Purple tang
Orangeshoulder Tang

There are other fish that are not tangs but thats the tangs id like to acquire for now. Your input is appreciated. Thanks :) :fish1::fish1:

*sry i did also post this in the reef fish section also. hope that doesnt bother anyone. More help = less suffering fishies :)

I'm a newb too and can't answer your question but like you, I think tangs are my favorite and all other fish are just fillers :)

I think my interest in tangs will be the reason I get an even larger tank (when I can afford one in the distant future).

On a sad note.... my hippo tang was caught and partially ingested by my carpet anemone. Needless to say I'm selling the anemone.

That's what carpet anemones do...eat fish. But I had a HUGE green carpet in a 210 a few years ago that I had for awhile and it never ate any of my 'larger' fish. How big is the tank that the hippo became lunch in?

OP, I posted in your thread in 'Reef Fishes'. :D

I have a 4"+ naso, a 3"+ yellow, and I just added a baby hippo. They love the 125g. So do my pair of clowns (small), purple firefish, lemonpeel angel, coral beauty, pajama cardinal, red lip blenny, diamond goby, pair of anthias, and a coral banded shrimp.

I had a yellow, naso, and three convicts in a 125. All seemed happy until I sold the tank.

You already have more tangs than I, so I can't answer you. Just wanted to say you'll love the tennenti/lieutenant tang. Mine still chnages color based on the background. It is said that they are timid, though, and usually best if placed as the first tang.

The hippo and sailfin will get bigger than 6-9 inches. Not to mention...they'd likely not take to any new tangs very well. I'd stick with what you have, and leave any more tangs to a bigger tank. Hey, just another reason to upgrade! =) I only have 1 4 inch blonde naso in my 180, and still think the tank is too small for it.

Wowzers.. 3 tangs and im already capped? i really do appreciate the help but i find it hard to believe that tangs cannot thrive in a more populated tank. Especially seeing TONS of vids and guys having 10-12 differant species of tangs in tanks similar in size to mine.

I do intend for my fish to thrive and not just survive, so if what i have now is honestly my tanks capacity i will settle for it, just a little disappointed that i am being recommended to avoid adding anymore of my much wanted wish list to my tank :( thought forsure i was going to be able to pick out atleast 2-3 more of my favorite fish..

Hopefully another experianced tang keeper with more will speak up and give some feedback on how to succesfully keep more of the awesome species.
