I will soon be setting up a second frag tank
my first frag tank currently has two 150W Halides so i want my second frag tank to have some flexibility in what I can have in it.
I am more interested in SPS but must have the ability to keep some softies
Would a 8 X 54W T5 Unit be overkill for the 2nd tank?

What are the dimensions of the second tank? I am running 4x39 watt T5s over a 36" tank that is 12" deep with great results thus far. I am seeing growth on my SPS and great polyp extention. With that said, I am only 60 days into the process of using T5s.

It depends on the width of the tank. Most ppl I've seen recommend 1 t5 per 3 in of tank width i think?

Sorry, but what are the dimensions of a 90?
My dimensions are
47” Long X 24” Wide X 8” High for frag tank 1
I will hopefully get a couple more tanks soon but will definitely be setting up another one soon.
I need to be able to have a variety of corals and the new tank will most probably house softies – Zoas, shrooms, Leathers etc.
I want to go the T5 Route using 54W 4 Foot Units – How many bulbs?
According to your calcs above I can have 8 Bulbs – Will this not be overkill for a softies tank?
