histrix and barbouri look a lot alike, but they are separate species.

Any online reef shop in the US is accessible to me. Like Reefhotspot, BZA, LiveAquaria, etc.

have you tried to work with a local shop so they know you are looking for them? If the fish is rare or cost more than normal the LFS tend to stay away unless they have a buyer waiting.

I think none of them will ship outside live animals of the states? Drygoods yes.

Minnesota actually. It's hard to have a fake location on RC so ill leave it at the state level.

Most, if not all of the seahorses are not available in the aquarium trade - at least not in the US. Partially because of a lack of interest, partially because of CITES restrictions, partially because where they're native to there isn't a lot of collecting, and partially because to many people, a seahorse is a seahorse is a seahorse. (same for pipefish).

Chance are pretty good that they won't be. I was speaking to someone that works at live aquaria, and they've never seen H. histrix available. (they're on my super seahorse wish list.) I've heard of people seeing them in the hobby before the CITES restrictions, but in the few cases I've seen photos, they were mis-identified.

A long time ago, someone from Seahorse.org had H. mohnikei. It was a long time ago so I don't remember the details, but he lived in Asia or the Philippines, someplace that was much more local to where they are native from.

H. zebra will probably never be available. Only a few specimens have been observed ever. Ocean Oddities, who went out of business a number of years ago managed to obtain a female for their breeding program (with permits) but never found a mate. However, you might be able to get a hold of the zebra form of H. trimaculatus. They used to show up from time to time in the hobby before CITES; its possible that they could be legally brought in but since there really isn't much interest these days in wild caught seahorses, its probably pretty unlikely.

Same for H. spinosissumus, used to sometimes make it into the hobby before CITES, but probably won't anymore.

As for the pipefish, yellow bandeds and alligators do make it into the hobby at times, they're just no common. Keep an eye on the online vendors and they'll eventually get them.

The rest of the pipes; well there just isn't enough demands. I wish there were, there are some amazing pipefish species out there I'd love to get my grubby paws on; but if they do make it, its probably going to be a one off thing because the majority of people aren't too interested in the different varieties.

I am particularly interested in Haliichthys taeniophorus! I failed to mention it in the above list... oops. I like it because I don't have the moola to keep seadragons, and it looks like a seadragon x pipefish. I don't know if it has been in the hobby before or anything about caring for it. Any help? Its distribution is off Irian Jaya which I believe is tropical or subtropical water... quote from eol: Indo-Pacific: Indonesian waters around Irian Jaya (northern coast and Tanamerah Bay) and Australian waters from Shark Bay, western Australia to the Torres Straits in northern Queensland.

^That Pipe is soooo cute! They look so much like Seadragons. It would be awesome to be able to keep one of those. But as far as H.Hystrix. Ocean Rider (Seahorse.com) sometimes has them but it says "Sold Out" right now. They also have Whiteis (Only 75 bucks!) but saying "sold out" as well. You may be able to contact them about this because they breed them all on their own facility, so they will definitely be able to tell you when they'll be available again.
As for Alligator Pipes, Saltwaterfish.com sometimes has them, and if you google "Alligator Pipefish for sale", there's a few smaller online stores with them in stock, but I don't know anything about their reputation.

I'm not sure what Cindy priced them at. I believe we got them in on Friday afternoon and they were eatting pods and some of the mini mysis shrimp when i fed them...i think she had 3 yellow banded pipes and 3 or 4 Yellow stripe cling fish. Might be worth calling I havent been back in the store since Sat. though so they may already be gone.

Certain online vendors have different website set upped. They do not have your or the animals best interest at heart.

If you want to go cheap. You get what you pay for.

On aquacon: I recommend everyone to do their own due diligence on this subject. However, I offer this as a starting point: BBB link (http://www.seflorida.bbb.org/Business-Report/Aquatic-Connection-27001077). Also, although saltwaterfish.com and I have not always seen eye to eye, I do not believe they are part of the aquacon guise of deception. Somewhere I saw a list of names they had used, but I could not find it in the 3 minutes I just spent looking.

On to more fun stuff, Reef Expert, have you tried contacting a company like aquatouch (based in phoenix, AZ)? They are importers and cut much of the supply chain out and also collect to order (for a price of course). There are other companies like this (I think wetpets, with whom I have no experience) out there you can look into as well.

Oh I hadn't heard of this Aquacon thing. I don't buy online too much. The only livestock I've gotten online are my seahorses (Seahorse Corral. They're great, but only have Erectus and Zosterae).

Thanks Chad! :spin2: I check aquatouch's site often. They have some nice WYSIWYG. but i've never seen any sygnathids on their site. Wet pets has told me they can get redstripes, but I have not corresponded back 2 them yet.:spin3:

PLEASE STAY ON THE SYGNATHID TOPIC< THERE IS A THREAD I CREATED DEDICATED TO THE AQUACON SCAM IN THE VENDOR EXPERIENCES SECTION> PLEASE LOCATE AND POST THERE FOR ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION ON AQUACON. THANK YOU :D

Aquatouch had a pair of reidi's in from O.R.A and wanted $150 each for them. They spent several months in the store til they finally sold them. I haven't seen many pipefish in their store. You could call them. They have a different facility that they use to QT all of their fish.

Their WYSIWYG tends to keep "SOLD" items on their for long time just to taunt you. Not only pipefish, I don't believe I've ever seen sygnathids on their site at least in the time being I've checked it.

Wet Pets Hawaii is great to deal with- Les makes sure all livestock are in top condition before shipping, and ships very carefully. I don't know what seahorses he can get, but if that's who you meant by Wet Pets you can't go wrong. I know lots of statisfied customers.

I don't think Ocean Rider (seahorse.com) has half the species they list. Possibly ever. Or maybe they had them once. I've been in the hobby for 10 years, and many have been sold out for that long; or they had the species once a number of years ago and haven't since. I think their bread and butter is and will always be erectus.

As for other sites and listing sold out items, I strongly suspect they keep them up even if they won't be getting them in anytime soon as a business decision. Because fish come and go out of stock at random times, consumers are used to seeing out of stock items (this wouldn't fly in a normal retail site, but fish are specialty.) Additionally, and this is a big one, having seahorse species people might search for will bring traffic to their site; and may lead to someone purchasing something else if the desired seahorse isn't for sale. For instance, if you do a google search for "reidi seahorse" the top two results are liveaquaria and petco, neither of which have them in stock; in fact liveaquaria doesn't even list them under their seahorse category.

They have been ***SOLD OUT*** for years now.

I agree w/ FishGrrl -- most on-line fish retailers will keep a listing of every fish it has every had in stock. Its like bragging rights (we were able to get this rare/high profile/hybrid/variation/beautiful fish in) much like some on-line coral dealers have a page of page of their most beautiful cherry picked corals ever, despite the current status of those corals.

For the majority of these species, there is no point in trying to have a retailer get them for you, because way too often, the divers do not know the true identity of what they are catching. If there is a Hawaiian species that you would like, you have been given the name of someone who knows his animals and is willing to get what is requested -- that is extremely rare, however. Few pipefish are correctly identified even when they get to the retailer. Seahorses are constantly mis-identified, apparently sometimes on purpose (I mean, how can you catch a fish on the shores of FL and then mis-identify it as being captive bred?) Then add to this the fact that there are a fair number of species that have been described from "3 specimens that were dredged from 300 ft deep waters and never examined alive" or appear to have a symbiotic relationship with demanding corals, and it becomes clear that putting some of these animals on your wish list is just going to give you heart break.

The good news is that each pipe and horse seems to show so much personality and individuality, esp. for a fish, that you can get a range of experiences from just a few species and not have to worry about what you are missing out on by not owning the species that are unavailable.

I am grateful for what I can have. I enjoy my seahorses and pipes immensely. I just bought my first pair of shrimpfish yesterday and I absolutely love them. I never thought that a marine species tank would be so much fun and enjoyable after starting a reef years ago, but I seem to enjoy the species tank( expanded with tank mates now) a little more these days...

How do you feed shrimpfish?

They are eating frozen mysid just like the seahorses and pipefish do. They also hunt during the day for pods.

The Mall of America Underwater Adventures aquarium has Haliichthys taeniophorus Ribboned Sea Dragon. They plan to breed them, last I heard. They're not as difficult as other sea dragons, but still need a very large tank.

Really? I thought they only had leafies. I've been to their seahorse kingdom like twice and never seen them. Are you in MN too?:fish2:

Seahorsesource.com is the best place for seahorses. I have been to their house and seen the amazing set-up. All of there horses are in top shape and they have a great selection.

FWIW, OR does NOT always breed their own stock, and they don't tell you which species they don't breed. Dan's website (SH Source) clearly states whether the SH he offers were bred at his facility or someplace else.

As for availability, so species take longer to reach market size than others and don't reproduce as readily (such as H. barbouri), so there are times when they aren't available.

Personally, I wouldn't touch any of the SH at most LFS or wholesalers with a 10 foot pole, as you never know where they came from, and they're most likely poor quality net-pen raised specimens (typically touted as "tank-raised"). If nobody can tell me where the SH came from, or the species (even if I know myself) I'd pass.

I saw Histix in an LFS today. They almost came home with me, but they are WC and I have no access to live foods to switch them over.

It was cool to see them.

Banded pipefish

I have been looking for a banded pipefish in the Fresno- Clovis,Ca US area for some 2 months now, and I have finally been able to special order them from Whities Pets, my local fish store, and if you are in the area look there for any good fish . I also saw some Dragon faced pipefish at Aquatic pets. I have seen lots of rare interesting fish at Whities.

Most pipefish have to be special ordered. Besides LFS there are a few online sources that can special order a few different ones.
There has been some successful captive breeding done with a few species but the vast majority are still wild caught animals.

I purchased CB banded pipefish from Ocean Rider. They came already trained to eat frozen mysis. I would think it would be risky however to put them in a tank with WC marine fish. Mine are in with CB seahorses only.
