Water Changes

I have two tanks. a 29 gallon Bio Cube that is a reef and a 150 gallon fish only.

The biocube is going on 5 months and the fish only is around 3 months.

the LFS said i should change 20% of water once a month for the 150 and twice a month for the 29. is this good? is 20% too much?

It's not too much, the more the better.

I've seen 10-20% weekly. Its recommended that you change less more often. I would say 10% once a week (especially for the reef) but there are people with FOWLR that do it less frequently because they can keep nitrites/nitrates/ammon/etc under control. It also depends on your bioload and filtration tho too.
