Hi there,

how many powerheads are recommended for a saltwater 55 gals FOWLR?

Thanks,

Manny

I have two maxi-jet 1200 powerheads in my 40 gallon and they were too much flow at first. They were blowing the sand around so I had to play around with the placement in my tank to get it right. I would Imagine that two maxi-jet powerheads would be just about right for a 55 gallon. I got mine on sale for $20 a piece from petco.com. This is half the price they cost at the LFS.

Personally,I'd just go with 2.
One aimed across the back from one side. And one across the front on the other side.
55 gallons are long and narrow and can be challenging to get flow right.

I used 2 Koralia 3's that worked well

I have one of the new Koralia 1050s and it isn't quite enough. I think with another on the opposite side would be good.

You definitely want 2 of any powerhead you get. You want turbulent flow, not just flow in one direction.

I used 2 Koralia 3s in my 55, but it was a reef. 2 MJ 1200s would probably suit your tank well, and would be inexpensive. You can add those rotating flow deflector things as well and your fish will appreciate it.

I pretty new around here, but I'm using koralia a 3 and a 4. What are the rotating deflector things your talking about?

They're for Maxi Jets. They have sort of a gear in them that makes them spin and oscillate the flow and they're powered by the water. With Koralias you don't have to worry about that. Their design makes them put out much more of an indirect flow to begin with.

i have to koralia 3's in mine and its great.
i had 1 for a while, but didn't feel as though there was enough flow on one side of the tank.
