I have setup the 3155 Osmolator. it came with a Universal AC Adaptor with a little switch for different voltage settings. I'm assuming it should be set at 9V, right?

Yes, 9V. If you are worried about kids and pets switching it, a drop of crazy glue will lock it their. In brown out conditions 12V is OK, but it is safest to use 9V as an excessive voltage could burn out a diode and while replaceable it will put you out of service for at least a week as you have to send it in.

thanks. what about attaching the wires from the pump to the controller. does it matter which one gets attached to which? if so, please direct. there was nothing in the manual.

Doesn't matter- to be technically correct brown is positive blue is negative- that is the European standard which would correspond to red stripe positive black negative. The pump design is such that polarity doesn't matter
