tell me about your orange digitata colony...

where are they place (can you post pics please), what flow level... did you replace them a lot before founding a place they like... did you digi got angry and retracted their polyps sometimes in responds to their emplacement in the tank?

Dunno if these qualify but the first pic is a Forest Fire Digi which is orange and the other is a red digi that has become more pastel pink! Both are super hardy; dont require much attention. Both sit center height, center of tank under 7x54w T5 lighting! Grows like weeds, with great PE!

Sorry for the quality of the pics as they were taken with my crappy P&S...I really need to invest in a descent DSLR Camera!

My orange digitata frags like medium flow and any light. Sorry no pics. I have one at the top of my tank and one at the bottom under a radium 250. Both have good color and polyp extension.

I have two colonies in a 34G under 150W/14K MH lighting. Flow is provided by two Vortech MP10s, both set on Lagoon at 1/2 speed. I dose the tank with a two-part calcium and buffer supplement daily, and add phytoplankton daily. I also feed the tank with oyster eggs or rotifers several times a week for the benefit of my Stereonephthya corals and featherduster worms. I do about a 10% water change once every week or 10 days.

One colony (my favorite because of its unusual shape) is at the top of the LR, center of the tank, and gets moderate flow. It's bright orange with good growth and the polyps are full and fat. You can see why they're sometimes called "velvet" corals.

The second orange digitata colony is on the bottom of the tank (I have too many corals, so I'm planning to donate this one to a friend who works for a coral farm). It's an orange-brown instead of orange, and while the polyps extend, they're not nearly as bright and full as the ones on the other colony. Healthy, but not thriving like the first one.

I only have a mediocre cellphone camera right now, but I'll try to get some pics up.

I have one at the bottom of my tank and one at the top (the pic below is the one on the bottom). I have 400W Radiums on HQI ballasts + 8 39W Super Actinics and both pieces are thriving.

thanks ReefBum!
at what distance would you say those at the bottom are from the lighst?
is the one at the top the same colony that you split?

Here is one of mine in my 36 x 24 x 12 inch starphire tank with 6 HO T5s retros.
It has grown well here but I have some under MH in other tanks and it grows about the same.

I have pink orange green and purple digitata. they are all hardy and can grow under a wide range of lighting, but they all grow better, faster and thicker and more colorful under intense lighting.

I was searching for people who experience problems with their colony of orange digi... are they really more sensible then other colors...

Well, not as sensible as good shoes ...

but, I have orange and brown purple tip and they are not as sensitive as some corals.
For myself, if I have been negligent or have other problems, my orange and green monti caps show distress before the digita, particularly when alk is low.

Ive been having problems with polyp extension on my orange, probably due to low alk, anybody else ever experience this?

thanks for posting ;) I'm trying to see why mine orange digi does not extent polyps like before... for now I eliminated pests, water quality, flow... I think they dont like to be near the lights... In January we did the scaping and raise them higher... and now they are angry... :worried2: purple and green digi are ok!

Hmm it might be both lighting and flow for me... or green clown goby.

About 14". One on top is from same colony.
