My current tank is a 39G Cadlights, so this is quite the step-up for me. I can't wait to get it going though. Had a local glass guy build the tank, I did the stand. Still a few more things to do, need some doors and need to tint the back panel etc. Other then that, I am almost ready to get some water flowing!

Dimensions are 48"x30"x20". I have been running a full LED setup on my small tank, this time I have decided to do a T5/LED build, something similar to the IceCap Reef Illumination fixture. I'll post more pics as I get things going:)

Woodworking looks really nice. Did you do it yourself? Also, who made your tank?

Like the external OF, I did a similar thing when I built mine only I made an entire side 1.5" lower and ran the returns through the box and over the side. Worked out really well.

For the stand I used pine and the stain is just Minwax Ebony. A few coats get's it pretty dark, but you can still see the wood grain through it, I love it.

Yes the overflow is setup to specifically to run the beananimal system:)

A local in Sacramento built the tank, his name is Keith Grandt.

Very nice! You should be proud of your work. I was about to order a very similar tank from Miracles but not as deep front to back. I got overwhelmed with the price and plumbing so I ordered an Elos 120. Not exactly cheap, but it removed the chances of me screwing something up. I really like what you have done and will also be tagging along. Beautiful tank, nice stand and rock scape! You are indeed off to a great start!

did you just brush on the stain and leave it or did you seal it with something?

did you polish it or anything else?

id like to know that finish looks nicer than just brushed on stain.

thanks

Glass is 1/2" thick. For the stain I used an applicator pad and put the stain on pretty thick, waited about 10 min and then rubbed it off. Did that twice to get the nice dark color. Then just rubbed satin poly over it to protect it:)

If possible id like to see a full backpicture. thx

spec, here is the plumbing in the back, nothing is glued in yet. Still need to add a union on one of the lines.

Curious me,

Why not all LED's?

Curious me,

Why not all LED's?

I have been running all LED's for about a year now, I honestly think all LED's would have been overkill. Until you see them in person, it's really hard to see just how much light they put off:)

That and just wanting to mess around with them:lol2:

Love the look of the custom tank. Was it tough to find a glass guy that knew how to put together a working aquarium, or was he clueless and you basically submitted the entire design? I guess i'm wondering if you simply called a local glass shop and contracted a tech, or if you had to search around until you found someone who knew what they were doing.

The glass guy I used was pretty popular in my area, he had done quite a few custom tanks. I told him what I wanted and just let him do it. Turned out perfect!

Looks great! I really, really like the dimensions, almost a cube, but not quite.

I'm curious . . . why no teeth on the overflow? Are you going to add something later?

sedor
06/08/2010, 01:27 PM
A lot of custom tanks choose the toothless option on the overflow. Its true, you lose a bit of surface skimming and can risk fish traveling into the overflow, but it also improves water flow a lot. Teeth can get clogged up with junk pretty quickly.

Fixture looks great. Real familiar to a well known fixture.

Where did you get your LEDs from? I really want to add some LEDs to my next tank.

Awesome build and great DIY skills! Are you going to add any active cooling into your lighting system? If you are running those bulbs on an IC660, you are going to need some cooling or your going to fry your lights very quickly. Also the LEDS would benefit too!

I dont think it would be too hard to put some fans in the top and channel them out the side with a splash shield underneath ala ATI Powermodule style, it would def be the best thing you could do to improve your already awesome setup. Subscribed by the way, love the dimensions!! Any advise when looking for a local tank builder or a glass shop that possibly does custom aquariums?

Will you be growing SPS coral? I'm curious to see how well they grow under three strips of 12 LED's. How high above the water is your DIY light fixture?

What corals will you be keeping in this tank? Will three strips of 12 LED's be enough for SPS lower in the tank?

With the LED's and T5s, plenty of light for SPS:) Here is a current FTS.
