I just set up my 1st aquarium - 120 Gal with live rock 2 days ago. Cycling tank now. I expected some noise, but the cooling fan from my light fixture is really noisy! Can hear it from 2 rooms away. What has me worried is my protein skimmer isn't here yet (should get it this week) and I know those tend to be loud too.

I'm not expecting a silent tank, but what can I do to minimize the noise - so you can't hear it 40 feet away? Are there cooling fans that are designed to be extra quiet? I don't mind paying more for it if that's what I have to do to decrease the noise a little.

The fan should not make a lot of noise. Ice cap fans run quiet.

Computer fans have worked for me for years.

What size is the fan?

I switched to a larger computer fan (120mm vs 80mm) to make things quieter. It cost about $4.

I agree a 120mm fan can be whisper quiet! if you can fit it.

Did you ever mod your hood? I just swapped out the fan in my Orbit hood and have plenty of tips if you're lookin.
