Where is th pirate and treasure chest going? Dont forget the clam with bubbles coming out of it.... And spongebob...I seriously hope you are not going to put that in your tank. Maybe stick to your local forum and not waste time in the "large tanks" area.

Thanks! It's going to be outside. On top like a real island. I'm going to have live rock underneath to hold it up. That way I can aquamend corals on the live rock underneath. I want it to look like a real island on top of water.

oh well, the show must move on. I will be making a trip to home depot tmrw to buy wood and tools to build my own stand and learn for future builds. Please chime in and assist me in buying the right tools and wood for this stand. What do I need?

Yep, same reason I didn't use it in my build. Instead I took regular studs and ran outdoor primer and paint over them before putting the stand together to help seal them.

Lol! I actually was going to build my stand at your house. The guy who was suppose to build my steel stand flaked on me and gave me the run around. This is why I decided to go wood and called you to help me build it. I'm waiting for you to call me so we can start.

I was talking about a weld shop in Pasadena who flaked. That's the stand that I was suppose to have made in my original post.

I hear you. I'm glad I'm going different. Most of my tanks were basic. I think it's time for this generation to move it up a notch.

Nice concept. I am anxious to see it running. My mp10 sucks air down from the top if I get it closer than about 8 inches from the surface.

really?? Is that at 100% and did you get rid of it? I can always pull my 40's down if it does that.

Poriferan
06/18/2010, 02:11 PM
Yes that is at 100%, on reef crest. It will create a whirlpool above it and suck in air. Then it blasts the bubbles all over the tank. I solved it by keeping it just low enough in the tank to keep the air out and high enough not to blow all the sugar sand everywhere.

Cool man, I am kinda glad you went with the trees rather than the hut on the island. Its original and I think the kids will love it. If you have any crabs that would be cool because they will probably go up on the island some times. Looking absolutely great so far keep up the good work.

I have a question that I just thought of. Is there going to be any problems with the live rock and and water inside the island tub? There wont be much if any flow of water in there, will the water become stagnent? Will there be any problems with the live rock as well?

I hope not. I have a wavebox and two mp40's. I thought about that yesterday and went over the whole concept with my lfs. They said it's more than enough flow.

If not, I'll get two more mp40's and add them to the sides of the tank.

But what i mean is, inside the island, you have rock and then an opening to allow water into that tub from the bottom. I am wondering if you are going to get enough flow inside the tub to not cause problems.

Still trying to figure out what crabs are reef safe that would actually come out of the water besides hermits.

I honestly can't answer that until I have this thing filled. I will definitely keep my eye on that. I really don't see a problem at this point tho.

All Leds. My refugium light will also be led. I was thinking of these... One on each side of the island hanging from the ceiling.

Nice island, I like the trees better than the hut too. The visual reminder of humans in the reef tank seemed odd to me, this seems much more natural and peaceful.

Awesome gf to "[make] you buy all the plumbing". Where do I get one of those? All mine says is..."more fish stuff. Again."

+1 brandon... My gf and I got into a fight the week I started putting my tank together. She didn't like me spending any of my money on anything besides her, and she kept seeing all the equipment come in the mail... lol, she moved out before it cycled!! any ways Fire reef incredible set up, I'm subscribing... lol. You know, I get asked that question alot but the answer is nope. I actually started the idea and someone posted the volcano tank thread on my local RC forum and that was the first time I saw it. I am going to hang my lights similar to the volcano tank but, Instead of halides, I'll be going LEDs.

That volcano tank is a beauty tho. He actually lives about 45min from me and I was hoping to see it in person.

They're suppose to equal the same amount of light output as a 250w halide with less energy and heat. Also with my tank being shallow, it should be more than enough. I love these LEDs. My lfs has them so they look amazing in person.

I've thought of doing something more like a rocky shore line at some time or another. The concept would be similar, but I"d aim for more of a small-picture beach look instead of the whole island. I think the whole shore concept, in any presentation, is awesome and truely adds another dimension to the whole reef concept.

anyway, enough rambling...very nice work so far!

Way to sacrifice something you love. You have a good brain in your head. This hobby is an expensive addiction and some people just can't afford it. It will come if you stay patient. I hate seeing people losing beautiful tanks, especially with the economy. Just plan for now until that day comes. That's what I did.

Nothing wrong with the wavebox, its a great product. I just think your mp40s will be enough.

I have a 4' 120g tank and have 2 mp40s in there on low, I had removed two tunze 6100's and the mp40s are more than enough. I now use one of the 6100s on a 3'x3'x2' look down tank and its more than enough.

I think with the wavebox and mp40's you will be fine. The great thing about the mp40's is they are controllable as to how much water you want to move. I bet if you turned everything up as high as it will go you would have water ready to splash over the sides.

Hate that your on the West coast which means waiting that much longer until more pic updates, that stand looks great.

I would think fiddler crabs would be pains in a reef tank. They are always climbing out of displays (fw or sw) and are never satisfied with what you give them in terms of space. I know they eat smaller shrimp and basically anything that they can kill and get a hold of. I had a few in my fw tank and I even had a turtle dock in there so they could climb up on out of the water and not have to try and exit the tank, I would even leave food on there and they would still prefer to climb up and out of the tank to fall on the floor. They are funny and comical to watch but more of pains then anything...

You have an amazing build goin on here. Very well thought thru and very creative!

As for the crabs. The guy with the "volcano tank" is infact using those california shore crabs. They seemed to be doing just fine in a reef environment and they love to be out of the water. You can go to your local rock beach (Palos Verde maybe) and catch some. I would get small ones to start and see how they do.

Have you thought about incorperating some kind of water movement coming from the island and cascading into the water? I believe the crabs would be more apt to enjoy such an environment over just dry land.

Have fun put'n this baby together! But before you do that, have fun with the new baby!!!!!!!

Tanu,

They make RGB LEDs that can be any color you want. They are a little more expensive, but it would definitely set your tank off. They have them loose @ frys. I am not sure about controlling the colors though. Ya know, Ikea has RGB LED strips/lights that you can adjust the color on. Might be worth checking out, I just saw them the other day there.

I thought about live palm trees initially but, I was to scared to have soil near my tank. I did look into mangroves and will add them around the island somehow. Just need to find them locally hopefully.

Tanu,

Any luck with those crabs? I took a bit of a break from the thread so when I came back to it I could have a bit more reading material.

I came to a sad but probably correct realization the other day. I decided to hold off on getting my new reef jbj nano cube led 28g tank. Thus delaying my actual plunge into the hobby. It felt like it was forced bc I got a new job and stumbled on some cash, and I just realized my lease on my apartment is up next May. While that is still a while away, in the reefing world, its not that much time and around the 1yr mark is when things start to get good. I just dont think its a good idea to have to move a reef tank within a year of its start up. Especially for a novice like myself. I know it can be done but it just becomes that much more of a risk with me being a novice and all. I think it would be unfair to the life in the tank as well as moving usually has some die off of critters.

I think I am making a correct decision, and next year when I move, hopefully it will be into a large apartment where the footprint isnt a deciding factor on whether I can fit a 40-60g tank with sump in there or not. Plus it gives me time for more research, inspiration, and more importantly, time to save up money.

Part of me wants to get talked out of the decision and hear "nonsense a 28g tank is more stable than the ocean! move it every day if youd like!" (obviously embellishment) but I feel deep down that I am making the difficult but correct choice for the aquatic life's and my wallets sake haha.

Hahaha yea, I Caught two crabs at San Pedro that day and threw them in the tank. They look awesome and are in and out of the water throughout the day. I also started hand feeding them the next day. I got em small so they last longer. I have more updates but I wanted to wait til I got my led lights in two weeks.

Also, you are making the right decision on holding off. That way you get what you want and not force yourself into something that wont make you happy in the long run.

Ill post more pics tmrw after my volleyball tournament:)

I like it. I was interested in doing something similar in the future, except a freshwater setup. Instead, however, i would find a water-safe epoxy and a very nice sand, and epoxy the sand to Styrofoam so it wouldn't blow off and such, and make it like a beach, going down into the water, except it would be more of a "Stream side" theme, with sword tails or rainbow fish, a variety of frogs (Including Dart frogs and tree frogs) With a humidifier, Salamanders, and some type of small tropical lizard, like a green anole.

Anyways,

Did you ever take this into thought of creating a Disc shaped concrete shape for the middle, and doing the epoxy-sand idea so it literally looks like a miniature beach theme, and maybe put a Mangrove in the middle?

Just curious

The issue isn't adding a tang to his tank, he can easily house several, but clown tangs are not like a kole tang or tomini that stay small, they get enormous. I would just be worried about a 15" tang in nice shallow reef like that.

Dang, that is big! Guess a lucky person with a big tank will have a clown tang pretty soon...
