red slime ?

Hello all

A freind of mine had a 4 month old 20 gallon long tank that he is having red slime issues with.


Its a 20 long as stated above. It has to Korlia nano powerheads and a whisper 50 filter on it for flow..

there seems to be a dead spot dead in the middle of the tank where the slime is gathering.

Would it be ok to put another power head in such a small tank?

Just my opinion but instead of adding another powerhead and having yet another piece of equipment hanging off the glass I would use that money to upgrade one or both of the nano pumps to more powerful pumps. Mabye keep the nano's as a backup or use in a future small tank build.

The Koralia nano puts out 240 gph. Your friend has two. That's 480 gph. Should be enough for a 20 gal. Plus the whisper 50, which BTW, is not the best for a saltwater aquarium.

I would look into repositioning what you have, and check into other causes of red slime, such as old lights, use of tap water, nirate, phiosphate, silicates, etc.

What kind of water is he using? Is the whisper the only filter? Lighting? Need to post up more info. What are his phosphate levels?

The lighting is 130 watt Pc with a brand new bulb when he established the tank so about 4 months old.

The whisper is just being used for flow... not as a filter.. however the media baskets are being used for carbon. that has been changed every 4 weeks.

the water is bottled distilled water

and i have no idea on the phospates..

Just do a 10-15% water change, it's just signs of high levels of nutrients.
Flow applied after would definitely aid the fix.

I would do some water changes with some RO water. Used the distilled water and got much better results with RO.
