Looking to getting a sump tank and just wondering the rule of thumb for sump sizes vs main tank size.
I have a 35g tank, what size sump?

Most people go with something that can fit in the stand. I have a 33 G neno nano and use a 90G sump against the wall.

Biggest thing that'll fit in the stand. Probably a 10?

That's what I'm talking about!:smokin:
What all do you have in your sump, what's the layout like?
I thought using a 55 as a sump for my 40b was overkill.

Just a boat load of LR, Chaeto, Skimmer and a removable DSB.

So, does one need sand on the bottom of one of the chambers of there sump, along with LR?

It's not necessary,i too have a ~35gal tank,24x24x15 1/2 and am using a 10gal tank as a sump,have anin-sump skimmer and a return pump,nothing else.I also have another 10gal tank net to it as an ATO reservoir.Works great.

Usually you want the largest tank that will fit, this is because the more water volume in the system the more stable the parameters will be. The reason for a sump is 2 fold usually filtration whether it be chemical mechanical and or biological and to put peripherals in like a skimmer, heater, ATO, RDSB, Fuge, phosban reactor, cal reactor, kalk drip. It makes the main display look cleaner and less cluttered. Personally in my sumps I put heater, Skimmer, ATO, Fug and RDSB. I usually don't put LR in there only because the parts that could hold the LR are slow moving for Biological filtration, ie in the fuge, or need water to flow over the fast, ie RSDB, and usually i find that in a sump detritus collects under and around the LR and needs to be cleaned often, unless you are using a filter sock on the entrance to your sump in which case that would need to be changed often.

If I did have a sump I would just put the biggest/nicest skimmer and the return pump. Idc for the refugium etc...

I have a removable dsb for ease of maintenance.
