So I've had a 55g set up for almost 3 years not and its about 6 inches from the wall. I've always had just a black plastic background but I want to paint it so you can't see drips and such. Obviously I can't spray paint it, is it even possible to paint the back with a brush? Or will it steak. I'd also imagimagine its pretty hard to get paint to stay on a glass surface without running. What do you guys think

Get a skinny roll brush with a long handle. Get a bucket of black latex paint and get to work.

Tremclad also works REALLY well.
Just be sure you like the color as its next to impossible to actually get off the tank....

And of course be sure to cover the sump and properly ventalate the area.

That's why latex is te best as you can peel it off if you ever want a different color or to well it. So go that route, you won't be sorry

I agree with iap. Latex comes right off if you make a mistake or want to change colors.

I've used 5% window-tint on my last few tanks. It works wonders and peels right off when you need it to. A 6' roll is like $10 at wal-mart. You'll need a razor blade, a spray bottle, and a squeegee.
