Im trying to decide what to do for lighting on my new 40br system I will be setting up in the next few months. I was kind of leaning towards MH but Id like to get even lighting coverage across the tank so im not sure how many bulbs or watts I would need.

I was planning on stocking stony corals (probably primarily sps) and leathers so I want to have a good amount of power.

my questions are:
how many watts do you have in lighting?
would you reccomend just 1 or 2 bulbs when it comes to MH?

I would also like to see pics of your lighting set ups and how the light covers the tank

Thanks

Congrats on the 40BR, it's an awesome tank. IMO a six bulb Tek or ATI would be your best bet... they work great on my 36x18x21'' SPS tank! :)

+1 I have the same size tank and use a 6 bulb ATI sunpower, previously I had a 40br with a 6 bulb icecap t5 retro. Both have been great

thanks for the replies

is there any one out there with MHs? id like to see a 40br lit by either 175w or 250w however i would assume a 250w would be a bit over kill

I have a 40b with a 250 watt halide. There is pretty good coverage concidering the light is coming from one small place. I keep an anemone in the middle and sps on the sides and everything is happy. Sorry i have no idea how to post pics on here ill try to learn tonight.

Heres my 40 breeder with 2 x 150 watt 14k and 4 x 39 watt t5's. Pic was from a cell phone so it doesnt really do it justice but the color I get from the 14k phoneix bulbs is great and I went through a lot of different types of lighting on this tank. If I could change anything I would only run halides with no t5's as that had given me the best growth and color and I love the look. Plus the shimmer in my living room cant be beat. I believe one 250 watt halide pendant would also be very nice as well. Good luck

I'm going to be hanging my lights up tomorrow, I found a great deal on a 36" coralife aqualight pro on craigslist. It has 2 65w pcs and 1 150 mh. I'll post some pics and tell you how it works out! Also, it's not a 40b, just a 40r so keep that in mind...Not that the dimensions are much different.

wow guys the tanks look great i cant wait to get the system up and going

my lfs got in a coral order for the first time in a while so i had to splurge some money on a nice sized bottle brush acro colony for a tank that isnt set up lol

but im thinking i will probably go with a 250w and one 36" t5 actinic for some pop, any suggestions on retrofit t5 kits?

thanks again
