Alright so I got my tank filled up with live rock a few days ago and found 3 red-ish anemones popping out of the rocks within hours of the rocks being in the water. Can anybody tell what kind they are? I just wanna make sure they aren't pests or anything...

The big one is about the size on a silver dollar maybe and it's an orange/red color with a few light white bands on the tentacles. Any ideas on what it is?

It's definitely aiptasia. Aiptasia is a nuisance anemone that will quickly take over your tank unless treated. In my opinion, the easiest thing to do is add some peppermint shrimp. I had a couple hundred in my tank and after adding 5 peppermints they were all gone in about 2 weeks.

Are you guys sure? The rock came from a tank that had been established for like 5 years. It looks somewhat like a tube anemone, but also somewhat like aptasia...

dangit. would coral banded shrimp remove these too? I'd definitely rather get them than the peppermint shrimp

no they would not. there are also other methods to remove them without peppermint shrimp, just gotta do your research.

You only have one, right? I would try to give it a blast with some boiling RO water.

Inject with calcium chloride, or use aptasia x, or joes juice are ways to go as well.

use some kalk paste and smear it over the aptasia. If you can remove the rock, take a blow torch to it and watch it burn then rinse with RO or tank water before you place it back in your tank.

Get a peppermint shrimp (make sure it isn't a camel back shrimp). They have eaten all mine, every single time.

definately kill them ASAP. Taking the rock out of the water is a very good idea, as a few pieces of a dead one will spawn many others.

im a big fan of getting pickeling lime and a syringe from your local walgreens/cvs and injecting the kalkwasser directly into the mouth. They just dont come back from that....its beautiful!

I've also had success with aiptasia x but try usually come back. The peppermints work best.

lol i tried that on one of my fiji rocks. I'd epoxy the hole where it stuck its head out from. next day it would pop out of another hole. I did this about 5 times before and kalk paste his a$$

Joes juice does the trick every time.
