The past couple of weeks our corals didn't look too hot. They don't look like their dieing but they look as if they don't wanna open up. After testing all levels (came back good) I decided to clean tank and clean filter, and thats when I realized the canister filter (main filter) wasn't working. Took the tube out and noticed it was clogged with algae. So I cleaned that and now its working.Could this be the cause of why my corals weren't looking to hot?

For people to adequately answer your question, please list out all your parameters, equipment, etc.

Well Pet shop didnt give me readings just said everything looked great..Ya I should have asked what they were...(my mistake)...i tested my calcium and its like 520..a little higher then what I would like it but didn't think high calcium can hurt coral...

Equipment- I have a Eheim classic canister filter that supports up to 75 gallons (i have a 56 gallon tank) a smaller hang on filter for added reassurance...Coralife SuperSkimmer for protein...and a 24" MarineLand MH Light fixture...1 150 watt bulb with 4 26 w T5s

You should get test kits for the basic stuff: ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, alk, as well as to test sG. How long has your tank been set up? What corals do you have? Have they ever looked good?

You really should not be using a cannister filter at all. It will result in nitrate build up in your reef and will lead to loss of your corals.

I would ditch the cannister filter, make sure you test your water parameters, and start correcting anything that is out of desired range in value.

Get rid of the canister filter...and the Coralife skimmer should be right behind it.

is there any thing wrong with using a canister filter to house GFO and carbon only?

Assuming you do not have a sump and require a HOB skimmer.

Your live rock will also serve as a filter.

no need for canister filter. just live rocks and flow.

Nothing wrong with running a canister filter provided you keep up with the maintenance. I use a RENA XP to run carbon, no other media in there. Works great.
