I have been looking into buying battery air pumps in case my power goes out one day. I def would feel more comfortable knowing I have a back up solution. Is there a certain brand I should go with or are they basically all the same?

I have seen quite a few people remark about the ones available at Wal Mart doing the trick just fine.

There is one from Penn Plax called the B11 Silent Air something or other. You plug it in AND add batteries - when the power goes out, the pump will switch on.
I only know as much as I do about it because my power went out a few weeks ago, so I ran to the only LFS open (Petco) and bought the B10 version (you need to be there to turn that one on). I did, however, order the B11.
(keep in mind, though, that my tank is only 29 gallons so if yours is much larger, it may not be adequate)... also probably wouldn't be that great if your power was out for a many hours (because of temp changes, etc...)

I have 3 B11's on my 150...swear by them. They don't move a lot of water, but I've had power outages for extended periods before and they worked great.

Uncle...I think that one runs continously...battery on or not.
The Penn Plax B11 only comes on if the power fails.

+1 I run them as well. I now run a vortech and getting a battery backup for it.

You are correct, I just saw it in their catalog and thought it might fit the bill.
I have a generator and have not used an air pump in years.
