I heard T5's are at their best at 4" above water. Is this a given or someones random idea?

I think that's an approximation but it's the preferred height bc it's out of the splash zone for the most part. Close enough for little light spillage and not gonna get covered with salt spray

totally depends on the par of the bulbs... i've seen some people raise the fixtures almost two feet over the tank because the acans and other LPS kept bleaching... especially when they rock ATI blue+ and KZ fiji purple...

but... YMMV...

I had mine like 12 inches up moved them to about 5 and its allot brighter. I also upgraded to some ATI bulbs and man they have to put out like twice the par as some of the cheapo brands
