View Full Version : Well...it's official.
Over the past couple weeks I have had some trouble with my montis. Upon closer inspection it has been confirmed...My tank is infested with monti eating nudis. :sad2: Suk deal.
So the next episode begins...
In order to erradicate these I need to remove all montis and wait 3 months for the stragglers to die off. Now in order to do this correctly, I am tearing down my entire system and removing every last piece of monti. With out a food source they will die. The new system will be monti-less for a long time to come. At least 6 months. Time to cut losses and start over. So I am using this time of discourage as an opportunity to upgrade. :frog: Looking into a 320g deep dimension display.
Of course they're will be ample carnage of some sweet acropora. If anyone has proper QT set up and is interested in some stuff LMK it yours for the taking otherwise it we likely be tossed cause I have little space for storage.
In the planning stages now...demolition estimated to begin ~6-8 weeks.
Oh and I'm replacing all my MH and VHO's with LED. My goal is to go bigger for less. Should be interesting.

Well the nubis suck, but at least you get to work on that new tank now :)
Bummer...and can't wait to see the new system:). Let me know when you are going to be "fragging". I've got a monti-free tank that I could put some stuff in and will hopefully be all LED lit as well so you can see possibly what they will look like under yours eventually.

wow they really do blend in. Did you notice them because your montis started looking stressed or something?

All I noticed was 2 of my caps that were thriving for past 3+yrs started showing tissue loss. I couldn't see them at all till I actually removed a piece where the edge of tissue loss was occurring and put it in a clean bowl. Had to use a magnifying glass. They are so friggin tiny it's crazy!

Don't toss all of your acros! I also do not keep montis anymore. I can take some acros, and they will be pest free when your new tank is mature.

Cato. if you are clearing everything out and need a place to store the pm I gave you, I could take care of it. I lost my good size colony to off all things, blue mushrooms that started growing around the base..when I decided to move the colony it was too late.
Pests and problems are part of this game. Please don't make any rash decisions!

Sorry to hear Cato, I had a similar problem several years ago and lost most of mine. Glad you're finally making the upgrade. Looking forward to the build.
If anyone is interested I still have (a lot considering you only need tiny amounts to treat) of pottasium permanganate which at the time was the chosen treatment for montis (worked for me). (i'm in milford)
Wish I could swing up there and snag a couple. You're just so far away....
Good luck

That sucks Cato! I've heard that some wrasses, such as coriss wrasses and six-lines will eat the little buggers to an extent... so if they aren't all over the place yet and you quarantine all your montis, that may help. From what I've read, dipping in pottasium permanganate is a hit or miss, and a dip in Oomed was the same, but they don't sell that stuff anymore to my knowledge. Some people have also had good luck with freshwater dips, but it stresses the coral out so much that it may only add to the monti's demise. Good luck with the outbreak and with the new tank!

LOL, yeah, I'm somewhat of a wuss. You'd think someone that drives 80 miles a day for work wouldn't fuss over traveling to the MA border once in awhile.
Borneman's link was the one I drew upon for deciding that treatment back then. The most difficult part was trying to figure out the proper amount to mix since I don't have a chemist's scale. I seem to recall possibly using one of the spoons from my test kits for the right amount but that's been so long ago.
I sent you a PM for trying to get this stuff to you maybe after work this week.

i had some in the 8 gal b/c i got from you but a tank that small i was able to suck them out over a two week period . i imagine a tank your size is a completely different monster.
if you need any help let me no doing a stay cation this week but evenings should be free.

No clue. No telling how long they've been in there. All I can say is I never had any monti prob till just recently.(~3 wks ago)

Wow, bummer. Just getting back from a week with limited internet and catching up, and I don't like having to read this! Sounds like you have a solid plan though.

Cato, it was great to finally see your setup. Your frag tanks have truly inspired me for my next setup.
I'm just starting the potassium permanganate treatment on the 2 montis. I don't have a scale so I'm winging it like I did last time. evidently 1tsp salt is about 2300mg and since this stuff is granular I figure its fairly close. at a dose of 25 mg/l for 90 minutes I need about 1/100th tsp per liter or 1/25th tsp for 4l. I placed in the tsp what I guessed was about 1/25th of the total volume and added it to the water. The water turns a bright pink which I now remember from last time. I'll keep them in there for another 90 minutes, then remove, rinse a couple times then off to their qt tank and I'm off to bed by about midnight. I know Borneman dosed anywhere from 50-200mg/l and at 200 the solution was toxic to corals. That would have been about 1/5-1/4tsp/4l and I know I wasn't even close to that amount so I think I'm safe. I'll let you know as the days go on.
thanks again for the invite and frags. Good luck on your treatment!

Hey Vince, great hookin up with you bro! Been quite a while. Thanks for all the goodies you brought me to help with my new build too. Sweet stuff.
On another note, these PITA's have made it into my QT tank too. :mad2: IDK I'm ready to toss every monti and just move on. :bum:
Alright Vince, here's what I decided to do. I'm gonna treat my whole QT tank(14g = 53l ) I will dose it with 1/2 tsp of the potassium permanganate for 90 min. Then I will remove all montis to a dip bucket, do a 100% water change and then put em back into the QT tank. Seems the only realistic option.
Here's a pic of the PP in the QT tank. Really can't see a thing.

Ouch!
Cato, hopefully that works for you. I'm not sure what that stuff is going to do to your little system. I'm guessing its going to wipe out any bacteria you have in there. Drastic times call for drastic measures. Hope it works for you. What is your guess at the mass of the pp in 1/2 teaspoon. I treated at (approximately) 25 mg/gallon. Your water looks a bit pinker than mine did but you'll know soon enough if the corals made it.
Good luck!
Well this was a last ditch effort. Everything was infected. So I treated 30-35mg/l for 90 min. Things look really rough. We'll see tomorrow. Talk about nuking. :blown:
