View Full Version : How much additional flow with a nano wavebox in a 120

I just installed a Tunze nano wavebox in my 120 4x2x2 SPS dominated mixed reef. I'm loving the wave but now that I watch it I wonder how much ancillary flow is required. Prior to the addition of the wavebox I was running a 6055 (1500 GPH), 6085 (1700 GPH) and a 6101 dialed back to around 2000 GPH plus my return at somewhere around 500 GPH.

My understanding of the premise of a wave is that it moves a wall of water through the tank and eliminates dead spots. Given this, it seems to me that all that is required now is to now make sure that waste is circulated away from the corals and up into the water column to be dealt with skimmer etc and to make sure water keeps moving through the rock to allow it to do its thing.

My question then is, in a wavebox configuration how much additional flow is required? I would have thought that alot of the 50-60x flow recommendation is aimed at keeping the water moving fast enough to minimize dead spots.

Am I missing something?

tagging along. i have the exact same question. i was thinking of adding a wavebox to my 4x2x2 tank as well.

I like the nano. I'm getting a pretty good wave despite pointing it to the front of the tank. It is a lot less intrusive than I thought it would be as well.

I didn't think a nano wavebox would be effective in a tank that size.

My wave is around 1 inch without fine tuning and with the outlet pointing forward in the rear corner of my tank. I have quite a lot of rock and relatively mature SPS in the tank.

+1

I have a nano wavebox pointing front to back also in my 130G. I get a nice lil' rocking motion and my sps polyp extension did noticeably improve.

Bimmerz, what other flow are you running?

I have a 6201 shroud ordered. My plan is to replace the shroud on my 6101 with the 6201 to provide broader less forceful flow (supposed to be more like a Vortech when you do this) and my 6055 unmodified controlled by a 7096.

Tagging along as well.

rsaha: have video of the wave motion in your tank?

Sorry - no video camera...

Resurrecting this thread. I am now running the nano wavebox along with a 6101 with the 6201 shroud at around 2200GPH plus a 6055 all on a 7061. I have the two pumps set to alternate every 6 hours and running 30% to 100% every 2 seconds and everything seem to be doing well. Ultimately I think I'd like to swap out the 6055 for a 6105 with a 6205 shroud but for now I am liking the results.
