View Full Version : I'm thinking of doing a Clam tank...

I'm thinking of doing a small clam tank that shares the sump with my main tank. Tank will be a 30 breeder size either glass or acrylic. I'm sure glass is cheaper, just concerned about drilling it. I am thinking of a large substrate bottom almost like the bulk ARM media. I'm sure it would be a huge detritus catcher so I'm thinking an old undergravel filter reverse flow just to keep it stirred up.

Thoughts?

It would look cool, but for me, the large substrate and undergravel filter would not be worth the trouble. There's a reason why we don't use them anymore :) If you want it to look "different" you could try some black sand which might have a pretty cool contrast when you're looking down on a squamosa or maxima.

I was also going to put some of my favorite zoas in as well. The reason for the large substrate was to let the zoas grow across it and make for easy fragging.

I do like the black sand idea though.

how about a 24x24x14 acrylic cube mark. i just happen to know where one is.

PM me with some details. I think a cube would be perfect.

How about a 4x4x1 cube?? I have one for sale...

I think that's too big for the place I'm going in. PM me some details/price and I'll see if I can make it fit.

Black sand starts off looking cool then it all goes down hill quick IMO. I wouldn't use black sand ever.

With your history with clams, it would be less painful for you to just stop by my house periodically and give me your money. :wavehand:

I've never tried it, does it fade or something?

Low blow on the clam keeping history bit...ouch.

The Idea has merit though, I can't pass by a "tray" of clams without google eyeing all of them and making them close a little with a wave of my hand. (actually it's my wife that blocks the light)

Hard to beat a downward camera shot on an amazing "bed" of clams...just glad it's your electric bill for the extra lights and not mine (it's high enough!) Be sure to post the pics, it'll be awesome I'm sure!

just like black paint on a car, you will see every little piece of crud and debris and all kinds of yuckies on the black sand.

looks great when it's all fresh and cleaned up, but give it a couple days.

Black sand contains iron which over time, is not good for your magnetic driven pumps if you have them. The idea sounds pretty cool though. The ARM substrate sounds like it would work and the undergravel filter should work. Undergravel filters work by pulling out the nasty from the substrate and releasing into open water allowing your main filter to grab it. I say go with it

avoid the undergravel and large substrate, they will cause probs later.Check your clams for parasites before you place them in the tank. Drilling is easy, do your research and make sure the tank is not tempered.

How about the black/white mix sand? I have it in my biocube and really like it. It's whichever one Drs Foster n Smith has.

That hurts, Lee. I have had the same 6 clams for many months now and just got another last weekend. I just can't see them in the 180 like a nice top down tank.

I don't see why you couldn't do a large substrate bottom...just a thin layer that you can vacuum or stir up.

Ya I remember reading a thread here about the black sand had stuff that would stick to your magnets. Not good imo. Plus how detritus and everything looks terrible on top of black sand and everything else that comes with age.

Well, the little misses shot the clam tank idea down in flames.....:blown:

Guess they are staying in the 180.:sad1:

Did you tell her you need it or the clams will die? That's always my excuse.
