I recently got a rainford goby from my lfs. I thought my sand was small enough but I don't think it can get any of it into its mouth to sift. Will it perish without smaller sand?

If you cant get it to eat frozen or live, it most likely wont do well. My LFS trys their hardest to get them to eat frozen with pretty good results.
Mine rarely eats from the sand. Once in a great while I will see it swift sand around a few rocks, but mostly it's always nibbling off the rocks even though I don't see anything on the rocks. :lmao: One of my favorite fish.

If you have enough critters on your live rock, then it will be fine. Mine spends about 50% of its time picking at live rock and the other 50% sifting the sand.
My advice is to just keep an eye on it. If it starts to look like it is getting skinny and is not getting enough to eat then find a new home for it. Otherwise just enjoy it. I know i love mine.
