I currently have a 29 gallon(not a bio cube) tank 8 weeks old. I have 2 clown, 3 peppermint shrimps, 6 crabs and 4 snails. I have a colony of xenia and zoaniths. I use a tetra 30 power filter, 150 watt heater and a bio cube protein skimmer. I have been doing weekly water changes of 3 gallons. Do you think there is a need for the skimmer because it doesn't work very well. I have t5 lighting and wanted some hard coral as well. Do you think it will thrive in my tank?

I would suggest purchasing a bigger filter for the simple fact saltwater fish/corals is not something you want to lose due to poor filtration.. Thats a lot of money. As far as the hard corals go. I would not add many corals until you upgrade to a bigger skimmer. I would suggest adding a sump system.. But thats just my .02 Sorry not having a sump with a big skimmer just scares me!

if i don't upgrade to a sump, what filtration system should I use instead of a whipser 30.

I would reccomend the aqua clear 70 or 110.. Bigger the better and with the aquaclear you can put media in there such as carbon for better water quality!

I love aquaclear filters. They remove a lot of crap when u put filter floss at the top of the filter media. Also IMO I dnt think it's necessary to change the water as often as u do. I've run my tanks without a water change for up to 3 months and the water parameters were almost ideal (had 5 ppm nitrates). I keep em without having to do the water changes by using the aquaclear filters and protein skimmers in the sump. I'd also think u should get a sump or a bigger tank that is already drilled.
