Rtn ????????

I hear alot about RTN but what is it? Can it spread to other corals? What does it do to the coral? Is there any way to treat it? What does it look like anybody have a pic of a coral with RTN? Does it come in on wild corals? What are signs of RTN?

Rapid tissue necrosis. The tissue dies very fast, with in 24 hours. You will see a white. The white is the calcium skeleton. The coral will die, sometimes fragging can save the coral, but usually doesn't. You are looking for WHITE. WHITE is BAD. Its not really a typical "disease" it results from stress like from shipping or bad water quality.

Can it be passed to other corals or even the whole system? Any treatment?

I don't think it can be passed. Fragging works sometimes, but once rtn starts it can't really be stopped. It is very common in sps and less common in lps. Sps is a lot more prone to it for some reason. Other than fragging nothing can really be done, it would be like your skin peeling off and taking all of your organs with it.

Here is the best description I can think of, since I just recently experienced it. The flesh of the coral melts away rapidly leaving only the white skeleton.

I have not heard of RTN spreading, but STN I have heard of that happening.

No one knows the exact cause of it.

Slow tissue necrosis, or steady tissue necrosis, usually happens from the base up and takes a long time for the flesh to die.
