i just got a toadstole leather coral ( 2 days ago)I am curious how long it takes before it fully acculmates. About half of the polpys are not coming out. I placed it on the bottom with medium water movment.

I have a deep tank 30 inches (165 gallon) 4x 96 watt pc lights

I aslo have a colt coral and devils that are higher up in the tank and they are doing great

Could be a week or a more. Give it time. If it isn't happy then the polyps won't come out.

If it's not happy after the week I'd also move it a little closer to the light. Hope this helps a little.

No polyp extension, looks like crap, falling over, breaking apart.

PIC? Could maybe try feeding in with some supplements too. Mine took a couple days before all the polyps came back out. They are usually out now, unless something brushes them.

what supplements?

None. It just takes time for leathers to acclimate to a new tank. It's not uncommon for them to stay shriveled and closed for days on end. It should start opening up for you in a few days time. Also, leather tend to shed periodically so don't be alarmed if it looks like the flesh is sloughing off of it from time to time.

I'm not so sure power compacts are sufficient at that depth in a tank of that size, IMO.

I'd say try moving it up to the top. Try to keep it in the same range of current. Give it a week or so. If nothing happens then try something else. IE more water movement. Only change one thing at a time. Limits possibilities. Hope this helps.

okay today the coral was not open at all i decided to move it in front of the devils hand coral and at the same level. and i did a good water change 25 gallons. the thing looks soo stressed out. i used gloves to remove it is that okay?

Also, leather tend to shed periodically so don't be alarmed if it looks like the flesh is sloughing off of it from time to time.

And, when it does acclimate, and start growing it will start dropping what looks like parts of itself. This is how they reproduce. Once the piece drops off it will float around the tank until if finds a spot it can attach to. But be patient it will take some days for it to settle down.

okay after the water change and move it looks 10x better. the only only thing i am concerned about is the head of it is vertical and not horizontal

Its normal for them to do this for a week or so. I also would say you don't have nearly enough live rock to supplement the tank and keep your params in the normal. But thats just me as you atleast want 1lb per gallon if not 2lbs per gallon. Also how old are your bulbs on the p.c.? Age of bulbs makes a large difference in growth and expansion, but not as much on these easier corals.

Here's a step by step guide to get your leather back in shape.

Step 1: Put it in the tank in medium flow.

Step 2: Leave it alone.

Give it some time and don't move it unless it looks like it's melting. Keep in mind they can lose a layer of their skin sometimes when they clean themselves. If your tank params are ok and you are not absolutely blasting it with flow it will come around in a few days or so.
