I am currently using a mag5 return pump and evolution 1050gph. Is this on the extreme for flow? I put two clowns in last night and they really seemed to have a hard time with the current. I shut off the PH and they swim around the tank more freely now. Would I be better off with 2 smaller powerheads or am I just over reacting?

the clowns will get used to it. even if you had your tank full of powerheads you won't have as much flow as there is in the ocean. the main thing is that you don't want any dead spots in the tank and usually it helps to have a couple smaller powerheads rather than just one big one

If you are going with a fish only tank, I would reduce the flow to 15 to 20 water changes per hour. If you want corals, I would leave it as is (33x).
