I have been battling this stuff for months - no joke. Please ID.

It's a nasty film of algae with snotty bubbles rising up from the sand all day long. Covers the rock too.

Params are within check via Elos test kits.

What is your current flow setup in your tank? Cyano usually starts in dead flow spots.

I had Dinos and the only thing that fixed them was a 5 day lights out. Worked like a charm, lost my biggest coral colony down to 1 polyp though.. now its back to 5 or 6 polyps!!:D

Are you positive it's cyano? I'm not calling you stupid but I'd like to make certain, because I thought only dinos had the snotty bubbles. Does cyano also have this? I have 2 MP20s in my tank and was considering getting the new vortech mp40 wireless to help with the flow.

I tried a Koralia Magnum 8 but it just blew my corals to smith-er-eenes.

Thanks!

Looks 100% cyano to me as well.

CYANO. I had dinos and beat them. They are no joke and look nothing like that. Luck for you! :) water changes, more flow, less nutrient import and more export etc etc. Good luck. If you are interested in the dino thread, it is lengthy, here it is.

Interesting. Well I turned on the Magnum 8 for now... pump is like a firehose. While it's been on, i stirred up the sand a wee bit, got rid of some cyano, and used a turkey blaster to get everything up in the water column.

New skimmer in a couple weeks along with new sump. Any pump recommendations?

I like the Gen 2 MP40s but they are pricey.

I bought some chemi-clean.. will use it soon. It IS reef safe isn't it? In addition I have bought a new skimmer, building a new optimized sump with chaeto, and added a couple koralias for the time being.

What are your thoughts on these pictures? For what it's worth, I got new lighting and sand around the same time, 3-4 weeks ago.
