View Full Version : RBTA under LEDs?

I'd like to set up a small tank for a pair of clarkiis, with a RBTA. I'd like to do LEDs. Anyone do this? Which LEDs would you recommend? I'm not a DIY'er, so don't bother going that route :D It would be a small tank, like a Solana. Feel free to link me to a thread if one exists regarding this.

I have heard some good things from nanotuners.

We actually had Ecoxotic come speak at our last club meeting; some really cool fixtures. I was just wondering if people are actually keeping BTAs under such lighting. I know LED's produce single wavelengths, so I was wondering if those combinations available on the market right now are sufficient to have a BTA thrive.

Just from reading on here and that, I would acclimate the RBTA under the LED's for quite sometime so you don't just melt it away. But that is not first hand experience, this is just information I have gathered from reading on here.

Interesting.... Hmmm, then I could maybe even go with a larger tank, and a carpet?

I would not mix species of anemones. Not a good thing to do with the information I have read. But if you wanted to do just a carpet, that would be fine.

Oh, no, no mixing... I meant instead :) I'm thinking something like a 2 x 2 x 2 cube, with 4 of the PAR38's.

I have two GTBAs in my 90g under G2-160w Maxspect LEDs. They did great under the 250w MH... didn't flinch when I upgraded to the LED. Still doing well and good color... Under the LEDs now for three months.

Sounds like a great idea. Be sure to post some pictures if you do decide to go that route.

I've had 2 RBTAs and a GBTA in a standard 90 gallon under a diy LED fixture for about six months. They've done great - they never moved once since I switched from 2x250 MHs.

I havent much experince with the Par 38 Bulbs, but alot of people seem happy with them, however, they arent the most cost effective to buy from the start, yes they pay for them selves but it takes longer as they have a higher up-front cost compared to a LED fixture that are DIY,or a fixture that has 120 1 watt LED's in it.

I myself would go with a DIY fixture. You can put your bulbs in the order you want them,You can change the optics, which I belive you cant do with a Par 38.

Just look at the diffirence of each fixture and see what you like best.I like the DIY fixtures because I like to work with my aquarium stuff, not have it shipped to me and then its plug and play.

I dont think you would have a problem with keeping a BTA with LED's,but you have to have the right LED's,and like I said,I havent much experince with the Par 38 fixtures,so I could be wrong,I would say call up Bill from Reef LED Light and see what he says.

I don't think he wants to do DIY. He wants plug n play...

I didn't notice the part of your original post about DIY (still caffienating). Frankly, I don't blame you - I would never have undertaken that project myself - my husband/reefslave is the one who did it. It was a bit of a PITA learning curve, even for him.

However, the main point of my post is that the BTAs in my system didn't really seem to notice the switch to LEDs from MH in a 24" tall tank. And two of the nems are at the bottom of the tank.

I'm not familiar with the fixture you're referring to. However, the tank you're using is shorter, so you should be ok.

Oh, and those Clarkiis are jaw-dropping.

Ive had a H. Mag for 3 months under A Solaris I-4 that is mostly diy now. Seems to be doing very well . Looks beautiful. Knock on wood.

Well, I had several BTA's under the panorama that did just fine.
But a carpet will be at sand bed, and they require stronger light, not sure a plug n' play is there just yet.

Oh yeah, BTW, my avatar is RBTA under panorama.

I have 2 mertens, 2 crispas, and a couple small BTA clones under LEDS.

Also had a huge two mouthed mag under LEDS that did great.

All my frags do good under my aquailluminations fixture.

Well, I decided on a 34g solana, so definitely going to go with a RBTA. Still undecided if I want a canopy type fixture, or hanging type pendant from the ceiling.
