View Full Version : Pairing maroon clownfish

I just added a pair of maroons to my 90g tank and wanted to share the process. I already have two mated true perculas in a carpet that lay eggs about every 10 days.
I got a maroon when I got the percs (sucker for a closeout sale).
The percs paired off and everyone got along fine for about a year. Then the maroon got very assertive so into the sump she went.
My LFS got some ORA gold stripe maroons in a few weeks ago so I picked up a small one. The female white stripe was in the last section of my sump. I put the new male in the section upstream of the female. They could see each other and water flowed from the male's section into the females and back to the display tank. This allowed them to see each other and perhaps she could "smell" him?? He seemed eager to get into her compartment and she would swim back and forth.
After a week I put him in a breeder container and hung it in the same sump section as the female.
After a few days I turned him loose and after couple of nudges: friends!
I don't know if it was the process or good luck, but it couldn't have been easier.
I just got a large bubble tip and added it at the other end of the tank from the carpet anemone. Fortunately it didn't move around much and I could add the maroons on Sunday. She was in the BTA as soon as she saw it. It took him about an hour to nuzzle his way in as well.
The different clownfish species have to swim around a rock to see each other. I figure if I keep anemones and clowns well fed, there will be relative harmony in the tank. The maroon came over once and nipped at the female percula and darted back to her BTA.

I will update notes on their behaviors and the pictures as time goes by.

The clowns being hosted by the haddoni apper to be oscellaris not percula but I could be wrong. If you get a better picture of them I can tell you. I wish you luck but I think its a terrible idea to have maroons in the same tank as other clowns. I think once the maroons get settled they will kill the other clowns. Also the bta is too small for the maroons.

Yep, I agree, there may be some trouble in the not too distant future.
Personally I wouldn't mix the clowns or those two different nems.

Thanks for your comments.
They are true perculas. The bta is still getting adjusted. Interesting comment on its size. It is the largest one I have seen. The challenge is to keep the mix. I will keep a close eye on the maroon.

I do have some better pics and will get them posted. I purchased them and the female maroon from Chad at Reefscience.

They are oscellaris. Did the store have them marked as true percs when you bought them?

definitely appear to be ocellaris.

Well, learn something new everyday. I didn't think the Oscellaris got dark as they got older.
Thanks

Has there been any aggression between the clowns yet?

Of couse. Actualyn the maroon looks a little worse for the fussing. I moved another rock btwn them and did't see the maroon over on the left side anymore. The little maroon dashed out at the moorish idol as it swam by (to no avail of course). The nemos are always facing the right as a pair.

I think your clowns are pretty no matter what they are. :)

They have all settled in.
The green anemone is now almost 14 in around. The Nemos (still surprised they are oscellaris because they have turned so dark - will post some pics this weekend) tend both face the female maroon when she comes over to the middle. The maroon rarely nips at them now.

The bubble tip is staying put. The male maroon is "lost" in it. Even the female disappears completely sometimes. The female has fanned away most of the sand by its base.

Both anemones are being fed silversides. The BTA has responded well and its tenacles continue to get bigger.

The fish in the tank get a sheet of nori, some new spectrum pellets, hikari pellets (smaller size for the male maroon), mysis shrimp, and some frozen angel fish food.
Moorish Idol, Regal Tang, Neon dottyback, two Nemos, two Maroon clowns (male is gold stripe);
Coral banded and peppermint shrimp, large from the Atlantic hermit crab (2.5"), zebra hermit, red legged hermit, serpeant star fish (5" arms), gozillion small stars, and a variety of snails

Looks like I have the rockwork set up OK and they rarely interact. Over the last couple of days the only interaction was at feeding time when they rose up over the rocks:
These two just laid another batch of eggs under the coral behind the carpet anemone. They have been laying eggs for months:

These are a white stripe female and gold stripe male:

The BTA is slowly but surely getting larger as I feed silversides.

My female oscellaris is pretty dark too. Not quite as dark as yours, my male is pretty orange. For sure they are oscellaris though.
