will a 6 bulb 54 w T5 do for a 31" deep?

31" front to back? No you will want at least 8 if not 10 bulbs.

31" top to bottom? Better be an ATI fixture or a really good retro kit.

31" top to bottom. I's made by Catalina w/ individual reflectors. Any further input? ( ps- thanks Ryan)

You won't be keeping much on the bottom of the tank. SPS will have to be on the very top of the rocks right under the bulbs and even then I wouldn't try anything too light demanding.

I don't like the Catalina stuff myself unless you have a really shallow tank and switch all the bulbs out.

The very least I would be looking at is the Tek stuff. ATI is your best bet as far at T5's go.
