Any advice is appreciated. Do I need a skimmer? Is there such a thing?

On anything ten gallons or less water changes are a cheap and easy way to maintain water parameters. And it doesn't take up valuable space in a small tank.

I have a Rio HOB skimmer/filter on my 3 gal. It might not be absolutely necessary, but my water parameters are awesome and stable, I don't have cyano or hair algae problems, and all my corals and other critters are extremely happy. I do a 20% water change each week as well.

My Rio had a huge leaking problem at first, but I used Parafilm to form a gasket between the cup and the main part of the filter. It is great now, even with the flow turned up high!

yes i have advice, somehow make sure you have plenty of water flow along the surface or some kind of surface skimming. my pico gets a film across half the surface because my HOB filter just drops the water straight down into the water and doesnt push flow across the surface very well.
