That's cool. I couldn't imagine trying my hand at reefing at that age because of the costs of everything. More power to you for working to fund your hobby.

I started a few years ago when i was 15 I think. This was my first tank, a 40 Breeder.

Money is really tough. I was fortunate enough to make friends with very generous people in this hobby, which I think is pretty common. Reef clubs and such are a great way to get dirt cheap or even free frags, equipment, etc. Many Reefers are willing to part with things in order to start a young person in the hobby. JME

Thanks! The RBTA was a gift from a neighbor, it spent almost 2 months in an unlit sump, was found totally bleached, and nursed slowly back to health. I got it the size of a half dollar. The stripes on the tips are unique compared to anything i have seen.

I started about 1 1/2 years ago when I was almost 14. It is tough, I always seem to be out of money right when I suddenly run out of something or need to buy a new piece of equipment. Reffing, mowing, and breeding poison dart frogs gets me my reefing money. Of course, a lot of the frog money goes to buying new frogs . My allowance goes to the cell phone bill. I'm hoping to eventually breed my clowns and cardinals, too. Later this week I will be selling a few dart frogs to the LFS for about $150 store credit, I know what I'll be getting! Woo!

Mmckibben
08/29/2010, 08:45 PM
This is my fourth aquarium. I try to start, then sell aquariums. This is my final aquarium till collage. I'm going to hook up a 20 gallon fragging aquarium. the reason I'm making it so big is so part of it can hold adult corals as well, so I don't have to rely on my main display for all my frags. I have the aquarium, an old metal halide, and my old protein skimmer, so all i need is live rock.

ok so its just;) a phase lol how old is the tank

filled it up about 4 months ago now so still a very young tank, plus we used all dry rock to start it which means all the algae stages (diatoms, hair algae, cyanobacteria) all are more severe and take longer to disappear, almost all tanks go through a cyanobacteria stage when setting up...its hardly a big problem lol the corals are proof of that
