I am thinking of getting a hammerhead magnet cleaner, but can't seem to find the dimensions of the magnet anywhere. for that price, I want to make sure I can clean the sides of my tank as well, which has some rocks closer to the sides, so I need to know how much clearance is needed by the inner magnet.
also, I have a 1/2" acrylic tank, so hammerhead is the right model to get right? does it come with acrylic pad or do I have to buy that separate?
thanks!

I called the wife and had her measure it...1" thick. I think it comes with the acrylic pad.

Thanks for the info!
I can barely pass my hand between the acrylic and rock now, so I think there should be enough clearance to pass the 1" magnet.
Anyone use it on acrylic tank with curved corners?

If you want to save a few bucks, I'd gladly swap you my outside Hammerhead piece (the side with the magnets in it) for a Piranha outside piece. Both the Hammerhead and the Piranha are the same dimensions (I've checked), but the Hammerhead has *MUCH* stronger magnets.
I bought the Hammerhead thinking it would be great for cleaning off algae, but the magnets are so strong that I can't really push it on my 3/8" glass tank.
PM me if you're interested (basically, you buy the Piranha, save $10 there and then we can swap the outside piece of which mine is perfect and I will gladly send you first for inspection, then you send me your Piranha outside piece). I'll pay shipping, and make sure you're happy with the deal.

I have a Magnavore in my tank. works well on the 1/2" glass and it is less than 1" and floats
http://www.magnavore.com/magnets.html
EDit, says it is 1.13"

you know you can always reduce the magnet force by adding a spacer (same trick is used by vortec). so its better to get a stronger one since you can correct it by adding a spacer, but if you get one that is too weak, then there is no fix for that.
I think I saw mightymagnet website selling a spacer, it will probably work for hammerhead.

I looked at the magnavore website, their magnet cost slightly more than the hammerhead. aquacave sells the hammerhead for $60 with $5 shipping.
does the brush attachment to magnavore useful?
edit. actually, magnavore cost $25 more for the 1/2" rated one.

I put a felt furniture pad on there which is about 5/16" thick. Still way too strong. These things are SERIOUSLY powerful. If I could pop one of the magnets out it would probably be okay, but they're epoxied in and I'd likely ruin the whole thing. I guess if I could get maybe 1/2" of space under it, it might work.

I didnt pay for mine. it came with the tank when I got it. I think it is the ER4 model? (cant remember from the office) The brush is AWESOME when it comes to cleaning the silicone in the corners. I also have a magfloat 350, and that Magnavore is way more powerful and turns the corners better. the 350 will get pushed off in the current.

now you got me thinking if I should get the piranha instead of the hammerhead.
I can get the piranha now for around $42 shipped vs hammerhead for around $60 shipped. piranha is rated for 1/4 and 3/8 thickness, while hammerhead is for 1/2 and 5/8 and I got a 1/2" thick acrylic.
the mighty magnet spacer for 3/4" is $20, you might as well buy the piranha for $42 and sell your hammerhead.

I see in marineandreef website, the hammerhead description is
This cleaning magnet is for use on glass and acrylic aquariums. Good for acrylic tanks 3/8" and 1/2" thick. Good for glass tanks 1/2" and 5/8" thick.
and for piranha
This cleaning magnet is for glass and acrylic aquariums. Good for acrylic tanks 3/16" and 1/4" thick. Good for glass tanks 1/4" and 3/8" thick.
since I got 1/2" acrylic, I guess I should stick with the hammerhead.

I glued on the razor scraper to the inside piece which works awesome for cleaning coraline, up to the seams, and down below the sand line. I've been either folding a sock a few times to use as a spacer, or just using my mag-float dry-side with the inside piece.
Just kinda sucks that I have a $60 float with a nice wooden dry-side that I don't keep in the tank...
