Unless you're going for a mushroom species tank or something, I find that it's very hard to have "too much flow". Don't get me wrong, there are obvious ways to do it, but in my 12 gallon (9gal display) I have two upgraded returns and a Koralia 2 hidden in the rock wall, and everything is happy.

In fact, adding the old koralia I had laying around actually halted my algae bloom.
