I know some larger starfish find clams to be quite delicious, and my sand sifter is sidling up to my new maxima. Do I need to separate these two?

Not to the best of my knowledge. About the only thing sandsifters eat is EVERYTHING living in your sandbed, then they starve and die.

+1 unless you are running a 6 or 8 foot tank. These are generally best left in the ocean.

This is a typical unknowledgable / uneducated comment that are found in forums. Sand Sifters can live for many years if the person selling them and buying them do a small bit of research. Mine is three years and thriving. However, I have a 150g with over 60% of sand surface in the tank. Therfore, food replenishes itself. Buying a SS and puting it in a 30g tank with no sand surface, it will die. They do not eat everything, starve and die if you take care of them and give them the proper care. Kind of like puting a blue tang in a 30g tank and wondering why it is stressed and dies. Some simple homework solves the issue. As far as hurting the clam. Do not worry about that they can coexsist.

I have kept sandsifters with clams as well.. no worries... I had a large like 6" sandsifter with my blue crocea in my old 125g with a large open sandbed.

I DO NOT want to get in an argument, but......
tspors should perhaps do a little more research and less spewing off at the mouth.
Yes, sand sifting stars can be kept alive for months to a couple years in a tank of sufficient size. By that I mean one of at least 150 to 200 gallons, with a DSB. They will still inevitably decimate the fauna of the sand bed, and most likely starve over the next weeks/months/years. They are a poor choice for MOST home aquariums.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT BELIEVE ME!!!
Please DO refer to www.wetwebmedia.com and do a simple search. of their site.
Listen to the people who do, indeed, know what they are talking about. Most (if not all) of the responders at WWM have PhD's in the marine sciences.
