I am about to receive an aquarium from a friend, It is a 40 gallon breeder with a whole drilled in the bottom, Could I use this as a Display? If so could I use the whole in the bottom of the tank as a return?

Yes you can….but you want to make sure you run the plumbing all the way up to, and above the waterline, and put in a siphon break. If not, you would end up empting the tank on a power failure.

Great for display. Is there an overflow box? If there is, then it would be good for a drain instead. Otherwise you have a choice of putting in a box or using the hole as a return or plugging it. Anyway you look at it you need a bulkhead :D Are you sure there is only one hole?

Bulkhead with a capped off pipe in it is the easiest. Where is it drilled? You could put a second one.

Petco is also having a dollar per gallon tank sale right now. A 40B should be $40. Another option if fixing this tank becomes too much of a pain.
