I will be setting up a 125g reef tank. I was wondering what is the smallest fish I could keep with a volitan lion? I have always wanted one. I also was thinking of leaning more towards the dwarf lions such as a fuzzy dwarf or dwarf zebra because it would allow me to keep smaller fish. Do you guys think a dwarf zebra could eat a bigger ocellaris?

well a good rule to go by is if the smaller fish is small enough to fit in the lion's mouth, then it probably wouldnt be a good idea. if the smaller fish is fast and a cave/rock dweller you may have luck but no good for the long run

If the potential prey item is 1/2 the size of the lion or less, the possibility is good that it will end up on the menu, at 2/3 to 3/4 the size of the lion, you're probably OK, depending on the height/girth of the tankmate.

You're also slightly better off if the lion in question is raised with the other fish.

We keep several lionfish and those are the basic "rules" we roll with and have never had an incident.
