I asked this on an old thread, but maybe more appropriate in this forum...

a while back I asked a labtech from Lamotte about colormetric tests for Cal, Mag and Alk and here was their answer (the I-Lab is a colorimeter )

we would recommend the i-LAB for its capability of plotting curves for colorimetric tests like pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and iodine. It is difficult to test Calcium, Magnesium and Alkalinity via colorimetric determination. We typically recommend titrations for those three parameters but do recommend a spectrometer for the colorimetric tests.

Hach said pretty much the same thing

so in light of Hanna's new photometer for Alk, it begs the question are they doing something new that other companies haven't been able to figure out?

it seems strange to me that Hach, Lamotte etc. wouldn't add these tests to their colorimeter if they really were accurate. any thoughts from the chemists here?

I don't think the Hanna meter has been released yet, so we don't know how it works, or if it works well. When it's released, we might be able to test it, and get some information on it.
