I have a question for you guys. Im looking to get back into reef keeping and want to have a smaller tank than I did before and found a great deal on this 40g breeder. Problem is the tank basically has 5 returns. How would you plumb this? Use 2 as returns and the other 3 as a closed loop maybe?

A 40g breeder wasnt my first choice however the offer was very good hence the reason Im considering it. Tank, stand, canopy, 250w MH, 29g tall sump, and a newunused Reef Octo nwb100 for $250.

Thanks in advance,
~Jason

Why dont u cap off the 3 around the overflow and just use the 2 in the corners? 5 returns is going to make for a hassle when it comes to your sump.

Thats actually what I was thinking. Shouldnt be a problem in doing so correct? Just some threaded PVC plugs right?

yup, and use teflon tape on the threads. I have some closed loop holes drilled for future use on my tank and just capped them with threaded plugs

I would hook up some pipe and a ball valve to the lowest bulk and use that for water changes. Open the valve, water out. Easy!

That is a good idea. I'd run a little PVC out of the back with the valve, and then put a hose barb fitting with a good length of vinyl hose running the rest of the length. Make it long enough to reach the bucket and make some sort of hanger on the end so you can bend it back up into a U shape to prevent the remainder of the water in the hose from dripping all over your floor

Yep! I'm thinking of adding a hole in my 80 so I can do this. I figure I'd put the hole lower so I can stir up the sand then hit the valve and let it drain out.

That's a good idea but the location I'd have this tank wouldn't allow me to get to the back of the tank very easy. I'd have to run pipe from the tank to under the stand. Then I would worry about the water getting stagnant in the pipe. Basically I couldn't put the valve on the back of the tank. It would have to be about 2' away from it. So that's 2' of 1/2" PVC that would have water in it not being filtered.

What about putting a stainer on the lowest hole and feed to a pump. 1 sump return, 4 CL outlets...
