I think most people are going to vote for the RO unit. It's pretty much accepted in this hobby that you're just setting yourself up to fail if you don't use some type of water filter to remove heavy metals and other chemicals found in drinking water. Chemicals such as phosphates, nitrates etc .... not to mention lead or copper that leaches into the water from the pipes in your house.

Honestly, this probably isn't something that needs to be asked since you already have an RO and know the answer of which is better. Anyone that votes tap should show a picture of their tank. Just because people are doing it doesn't mean it's good. :spin2:

I was using RO water for top offs & thought I was using RO/DI water for salt. You see I was buying salt water from my LFS & just assumed(i know i know) they used RO/DI water. Well I was BSing him one day & he said "oh no I just use tap water & add prime to it, never had a problem yet" well I sure was having hair algae problems. I bought a RO/DI unit & solved that problem.

i was buying RO/DI from my local pet store for 3+ months, then bought a TDS meter and found out the TDS was like 61!

thats when i bought a rodi for my self!

RO/DI it's a 100 gpd unit from when I had bigger tanks. A bit of overkill but it's still convenient.

By me (in northern NJ) there are a number of water stores that sell water run thru very large ro/di units (for people to drink). I have used it for years.

all tap is not created equal, There is a water system somewhere arond here that has a tds reading of around 30. I know if a couple people who use tap and have nice looking tanks, not goregous but nice

I use RO/DI , my TDS in is 133-134, out 0

I use the LFS's RO water. I think the TDS out is in the neighborhood of 10.

I'm falling out of love with them. Fast.

Just ordered a pack of coral online today for the first time ever. I've always been the guy to support the local LFS. But after a month of him not getting anything in for me, I'll just be stopping by to get water here and there.

My tap water TDS is in the 500's. Yeah, I could only imagine what kind of crap is in that. Im not drinking it. I go through a lot of DI resin but only 0 TDS goes in the tank.

I personally use RO water now but have used tap in the past. (Back when I didn't know what RO/DI was). Really didn't have any problems with it back then. There are a couple of people I work with now that still use tap and swear they don't see the point of RO.

DevinWolfe

check the TDS........

TDS at which point? Tap is usually mid 200s, after RO membrane ~10, after DI - 0.

I use my own RO/DI, RO for drinking.

There was a reefer here some time ago that had phenomenal water quality from his tap... I believe it was well water.. springfed or something like this... those instances are rare.

I know that I should not use tap, but I'm cycling the tank at the moment, and my last tank was tap for over a year. Here is a link to my old tank, I sold everything during my move to a new house and started over with a larger tank and It is still cycling.

Here is the thread of my new tank.

Any comments are fine. I would like to get a unit, but I would like to start adding livestock first and then getting a unit. I know I'm the only one that will out myself, but I would rather be out there telling people what I'm doing.

For many year I was getting my water from LFS until I found out that it had 8 TDS. I got my own RO/DI unit and have 0 TDS. My tap water has about 480-540 so I cant use it.

the 8tds may of been from their water sitting, water can some out @ 0 TDS, but as it sits the tds can raise alittle.....

but its good you got your own system!
