Just bought my first acan! Was wondering if I could get some advice. I have read that they are easy to keep will do well under PC or T5's moderate flow . Feedings will help with growth.

I paid 20 bucks for one polyp but I could see 4 extra well developed new polyps at the base of it. Was that a fair price?
Any info would be appreciated.

I will post some pics in a few hours after they fully expand for an ID.

Fair price really depends on the color morph of the acan you received.
Personally, for myself $20 for one full polyp is a little much, but the people I order from in Canada here sell 6 full heads for $35.

I know Mr. Coral is selling several morphs in their $10 section, and they look to come with at least one to two heads each.

But as long as you are happy with the color and the new heads look good and healthy, then $20 isn't too bad a price. I have seen them go for way more.

Excuse the dirty glass. Thiss was a pic 15 minutes after placement. I went out for a few hours and was hoping to get a shot in it's full glory when i got back but a shroom had expanded over it and was irritating it. So the early shot will have to do.Any Idea on the variety?

BTW, Thanks for the reply Nebthet. This is sort of an experiment to see how they do in my tanks. Right now it is in my 14g cube ander 48w of PC bulbs, mid level. Do you have any pics of yours? I would love to see them.

Beautiful assortment. Looks like yours are placed on the sand. I mounted mine to a piece of rock. I figured they would be able to spread easier. was that a mistake?Do you feed yours?

kingfisher62 acans seem to do best on sand due to low light and low/moderate flow in that area. I counted 5 heads so for $20 that's a fair price. Your acan seems to be a typical and healthy two color acan which should do well for you. You can feed anything with protein once or twice a week if you want.

Thanks 2006, It is already mounted to a rock but I will lower it in the tank if it does not do well in the tank where it is.Typically , I do not feed my corals.will they do fine without food? Do you feed yours?

Hey Kingfisher,

Yes, I keep mine on the sand bed as that is where I have had some available real estate recently and I get moderate lighting down there.

Depending on what your lighting is, your acan will more than likely do well where you have placed it. I have seen several people keep them on the rockwork and they do just fine there.

Yes, I feed mine every once in a while. Not too often though. I usually feed them mysis or a small Ocean nutrition pellet. But they will do fine without direct feeding. They will normally grab something out of the water column. They will just grow a little slower if you don't feed them, but they will be just as healthy.

Here are some updated pics from different angles. Still a little deflated on one side but it is looking better. It enjoyed a feeding yesterday.
Is there a name for this variety?

Ok, I Just got a larger frag for 35 bucks. These polyps seem huge each one is over an inch. They went into my 55G with the T5's. I attempted to take some shots from above. They did not come out too shabby considering the depth of the water.

What do you mean the mushroom burned it!! That can happen?! Oh.......oh no. Can someone explain this to me? I'm gonna change my name to TheRookie.

Yeah, a lot of corals can sting or irritate other corals. Not only by touch but also by chemical warfare from a distance. That is why placement is very important.

Just didn't realise mushrooms had that capability. I carefully placed my elegance and torch, not the mushrooms. So have those few acan heads recovered for you?

Ok, something weird is happenning the last two nights my acan is looking awesome and huge then it seems they reach a point and start spitting out zooxanthellae. I think they are getting too much light. Has anyone witnessed this before?

Yes they might be pooping for lack of a better word :) I would say you move your first frag though, mushrooms spread and having it there is asking for problems!

I will post some pics in a few hours after they fully expand for an ID. That was a good deal but I know someone who has awesome acan frags who could do better for you! And he ships out He also has good deals on othr livestock as well. His name is and he is the owner of . His site is down right now but give him a call . Actually if you look to the left bottom of my tank you will see one of his acans. It is really nice and all I run on my tank for lights are 4 pc two blue actinic and two white. And my tank is a 37 gallon.

Ok, Question for everone. My acans are doing great there are new heads that are getting huge. But the new heads do not have the vibrant red like the older ones do.

Any ideas what might cause that.

They will gain more color as they mature..nothing to worry about.

Hope you are right Sandra. I was thinking that at first but some of these polyps are almost as big as the others. Thought my water might be lacking something!

Some of mine have taken 2-3 months to color up...I have 5 different colors in my tank and they have all grown and eventually the babies match the original pieces. Give it time.

I am not sure if this will be a dumb question, or not, but....

Do acans "pop" under actinics, or are they more like dendros that look better in full light?

Thanks,
Michael

acans will look a lot better with T5s or artinics

I have a bunch and can see the difference

From what I understand corals develop color as protection from UV rays. So, either the darker one will begin to lighten up or the lighter ones will begin to darken. Also keep in mind it takes time for them to do much of anything. Could take weeks to fully color up - or lighten.

very cool to see the growth in 6 months! I just got started with acans also. I had seen them at lfs but some were just way too overpriced and then at my first swap I came home with 3 and have now added 2 more. I am totally hooked on them
