Is not mixing life from different oceans an important rule to follow?

As long as the fish are not aggressive against each other, nope.

I have clowns from the Solomon Islands, an angel from Fiji, gobies from the Caribbean, and a wrasse from Africa all in the same tank and they seem to be happy campers

I think i can also say (with confidence)that 90% of people with reef tanks have life forms from all over the world mixed together

You may have trouble mixing corals from different biotopes and having all of them thrive. They'll survive but may not open fully or have great color. It hard to make water chemistry, light, current and other conditions match all the different requirements. Fish are a different story. As long as they are compatable, there should be no problem.

Yea i forgot about corals, different corals need different light intensities and amounts of flow. Everything is possible if planned out accordingly though
