What in your opinion is more important and more beneficial, live rock or water volume. Example would be 100 gallons of water total, would you lean towards more rock or more water, considering the more rock you add the more water is displaced, so which is more beneficial to a stable system in your opinion.

IMO this is a pointless vote. it all is dependant on whether you want a heavy fish load or lean more toward corals. if you want FOWLR, then yes, go with more rock to help break down the waste. If you want more coral and less fish, then you can get away with less rock and more water volume for a more open display. a couple ways you can get around these problems are by having less rock in your display, and loading up on rock and have a good skimmer in the sump. Or just go with less fish and the need for increased ammounts of live rock decreases

I dont think it is pointless. I guess what I am getting at is, do you think it is more important to have water volume for more stable parameters or think that more live rock with beneficial bacteria is better. I have a sump, I have rock in both it and my display.

i would think there is a lot more water in the ocean than rock,,,so i wold think a 400 gallon tank with 2" of sand and 50-100 pounds of rock lightly stocked would be very stable no?

if you have a sump, i would load the rock in there and go light in the display, esp if you decide on going SPS. you will end up taking rocks out of the display to make room for coral growth.

Without nitrate reduction the levels would eventually rise to an unacceptable level in any reasonable volume of water with any bioload. Live rock or other nitrate reduction allows a reasonable bioload in a limited volume of water. That being said, a lot of live rock in a lot of water with a light bioload would be best.
