Although I already have a LED fixture I plan on building one for my 24" x 24" x 24" Marineland 60 cube. I have LPS, Acans, Zoas and a few SPS Birdnest up high. I plan on using 36 Cree XR-E Q5 3 watt with 70 or 80° optics on a 15" x 15" heatsink with Mean Well drivers from Reef LED lights. The whole project is going to set me back about $300-400.

Comments or suggestions from someone who's already done it appreciated.

I assume you're shooting for a white look? I wouldn't stick with just cool whites, unless you like that 8-10k white.

No, I'm looking for a 15-16k look. I was going get Cree XR-E LEDs. 24 royal blue, 12 cool white. Are Q5 cool whites? Sorry :(

I have basically two of what you're planning sitting over my 48x24x24. I have the 36 LEDs spaced about 2.5" apart on a 16x16 space with 60 deg optics, but in a 1:1 white to blue ratio, they light the entire tank very nicely at 12" above the water.

with 80deg optics I think you will really like the results.
