View Full Version : Can I have a peninsula tank and a wave?

I'm looking at having a custom 72"(h)x30"(w)x24"(d) tank built with an external overflow on one end. I'd like to add a wavebox, but I'm concerned with how to setup the overflow/drains.

My initial thoughts were to go with a BeanAnimal type system. I figure I'd have to run the siphon drain lower than the open channel drain to try to maintain the siphon between waves. But I don't know if anyone has tried this...and just how much lower would I have to run it?

If I went with a regular durso style drain how much extra noise would I be dealing with?

Am I doomed to having a noisy tank if I do a wave and end overflow?

You will not get much of a wave with a 6' tall tank that is only 30" wide. Are those numbers right? Or is is 72" wide, 30" tall and 24" deep? If that is the case, it will be more noisy than normal and the Bean system may be an issue but a regular Durso will work.

The original numbers are right.

Will those extra 6" make that much difference when trying to make a wave?

Where did you find a tank that is 72" high? How will you ever reach the bottom?

Ack...I was just looking at the width thinking you were trying to fix that.

72"(l)x30"(w)x24"(d) :spin2:

Sorry!

(Can't edit my original post...ugh)

Ok, now i feel better, I couldn't imagine a tank like that, for many reasons.

The Bean will present a challenge, however the Durso will work just fine as will the Megaflow type, not sure who makes the tank you have, the noise will not be bad and a cover on top of the overflow will help greatly. Do not try and pump too much water through the sump, meaning, don't try and max out the overflow, it isn't needed.

Right now the tank isn't built. Looking to have Miracles in Glass build it, but I want to be sure of the overflow setup before finalize and have them build it.

Make sure the builder knows you are going to run a wavemaker and want the overflow to be as quiet as possible. Miracles has experience with this kind of setup and will make good choices. They build a good tank.

I will definitely make sure they know my plans and take any input I can get from them. Thanks.
