Cliffs:

-My tap water is very bad (800+TDS)
-gal/gal it costs the same for me to buy water as it does to make it
-Today i tried to haul 30 gallons of water from the store (2 miles away) in a rubber made 32 gallon container
-Worked pretty well, but sloshed about 2 or so gallons judging from how wet my jeeps rear area was
-I use a pump and hose to get it into my house, i do it this way so i don't have to haul buckets/containers.

Now that you are caught up to speed, i will see if anyone has any ideas. I can get a 35 gallon Ag. water container from Tractor Supply for $106 out the door, and a 65 gallon for $190 out the door. While i know those are guaranteed not to spill in my jeep, they are pricey...and im trying to find the cheapest way possible to haul this water in the largest amounts as possible all at once. Like i said above, the $10 rubber made containers with locking lids worked all right. But in order to keep the water in the container, i had to drive very cautiously and even then i spilled some water in the parking lot before i even hit the road.

Does anyone have any ideas here? What other containers should i take a look at before buying the Ag. water containers? Im know if i use a tie-down strap wrapped around the rubber made that would keep the lid on better...but i think it would still spill out.

EDIT: Best deal i have found so far:

$100 landed to my door for a 55 gallon.

Have you thought about using pre-filters for your water before the ro/di unit? Or maybe a softener?

Hauling water is a PITA anyway you look at it.

Ive tried 2 sediment blocks in front of the std setup and it made very little difference. This is also post water softener (which btw, does nothing to the TDS) I have to replace the membrane every 1-2 months (every 150 gallons or so) just to keep 0 TDS. I even tried letting the TDS go till 10'sh, but whatever is in my water really fuels diatom growth. If i could easily keep 0 TDS water coming in for $50/month i would do it, but unfortunately i cant.

Man, that really sucks. I did not know that a softener would not lower tds. I just assumed it would when it took out some of the minerals.

I would say then you are on the right track with the storage containers. Would 55 drums fit in your jeep? You might be able to find a couple of those for little to no cost.

Good luck :)

Round two *DING DING*

This time around, im trying one of these:

I had that laying around, i used to store my RO water in it when i had an Ro/Di filter.

And im using these:

Too:

1) Secure it in my rear area with the built in tie down points (i love jeeps)
2) I also have one wrapped around the top to keep it round, although with a cylinder shape the water should not be able to deflect the sides like a rectangle...but still...im using it for that purpose.

I got it in there, all ratched down and secure. Baring a wreck, that thing is not moving. Im going to head off in a bit before he closes and attempt another 30 or so gallons. Hopefully this time, with much less sloshing/spilling.

To stop the sloshing, line your container with a plastic bag and close it up: rubber band or zip ties.

Wow, awesome idea. Thats exactly the kind of thing i was hoping someone would pop in here and say!

THANK YOU!

Success!

I just moved 20.5 gallons without spilling a drop, also without a parade behind me on the way home. I marked the line in the garbage can so i know how full i can go again without spilling, of course i will try and squeeze in another 5 gallons tomorrow to make it 25 gallons/trip.

I also marked a 10 gallon mark in my mixing tank, now all i need to do is buy a measuring cup and i will have my water(mixing) tidied up.
